Friendship Is
@Olan L. Smith, 4-27-1978
Friendship is,Four years of hope, caring, struggling,
Seeing our own limitations,
Overcoming those limitations, writing speeches,
Studying for tests, learning, growing, changing,
With the hope of one day becoming.
It is the victories and the defeats of chess games.
It's the boasting of how we checkmated the other with only a rook,
And a knight, or a queen and a bishop.
It is listening when the other needs a listening ear.
It is guidance when the other needs guidance.
But maybe more than any of these,
It is the ability to be ourselves
In the presence of the other knowing that what we are
Is acceptable needing no apology. Perhaps, Dave Yoder,
Friendship is love, And I am glad that our friendship has been so enduring.
(A/N: Words written in Dave Yoder's NCC yearbook. David Yoder passed away August 2006, and he was a dear friend. )
