Chapter 16

The guards just laugh and walk away, speaking in Elvish. I sit down on the floor because there's no where else to sit since the bench is barely big enough for one person to lie down on. I pull my knees up to my chin and wrap my arms around my legs. I rest my head on top of my knees.

"Can you sing, please Ashy?" asks Jo.

She called me by my nickname. Usually only my dad calls me that and no one has called me that since my dad died. Whenever Jo or I is upset about something I sing. So I start singing Everything Burns by Ben Moody.

She sits in her corner

Singing herself to sleep

Wrapped in all of the promises

That no one seems to keep

She no longer cries to herself

No tears left to wash away

Just empty diaries of empty pages
