Chapter 14

The computer was empty except for a guy playing world of war craft in the corner. Allie and Courtney were already waiting, with Google translate open.

I pulled the snow globe out of my bag.

“Au domoni iko? What’s it mean?” Allie asked, studying it with interest.

I typed in the words and changed the language to Hawaiian-English.

My finger hesitated over the enter button. What if it was something horrible like I hate you? Or you’re ugly? Then again, I don’t think they’d sell snow globes with that on it.

The words flashed up on the screen and my eyes widened in shock. Allie’s mouth dropped and Courtney burst out laughing.

“I love you? That’s what it says! I love you!” Allie squealed in excitement. “We can go rub this in Hannah’s face and-“

“No!” I cut her off angrily. “It means as a friend”

Courtney shook her head. “I don’t think so Amy. It’s supposed to be a romantic present”

I stood up from the chair feeling light headed. This made things even more complicated. Nate wasn’t in love with me, if so, why did he get back with Hannah?

“Obviously there was a mistake. Nate thought it meant keep smiling!” I exclaimed, trying to convince them. Allie seemed to consider this for a moment before frowning.

“He must be lying” She concluded, sounding sort of like a detective.

I pushed her aside leaving the computer room quickly. I didn’t want to stare at that screen any more, I had to get out.

“Oh hello Amy. Where you looking at an online dating site? Why the long face? No matches?” Hannah and her gang stood in front of me.

I glared at them feeling very angry, close to the edge. “Move Hannah”

She pouted her lips. “Why?”

Without even realising what I was doing, I walked forward and pushed her to the ground. Her books sprawled out everywhere and she moaned in pain. The other girls looked scared and backed away.

“Amy wait!” Courtney and Allie stopped when they saw the scene in front of them. But I didn’t.

My feet carried me far down the hall and out the front gates. The fresh air felt good against my skin and I felt like I could think again.

“TEACHER! AMY ATTACKED ME!” Hannah’s shriek was so loud I heard it from out here. I was going to get in massive trouble for this, but it felt slightly worth it.

I walked around the side of the school and sat on a wooden bench. Was it classified as ditching school when you were metres from the gates? I didn’t really care.

I just needed some alone time.

Nate’s POV

I heard a shrill voice coming from the hall. Jack and I ran down to see what the commotion was about. Jack already had his mobile out, hoping to film a catfight I suspected.

What I saw surprised me. Hannah was being helped up by a teacher while the principle was tyring to calm her.

“Now who pushed you Hannah?” She asked her.

Hannah straightened her hair before clutching her side. “It was that Amy girl! She just attacked me!”

Amy? That made me stop. She wouldn’t attack Hannah, right?

“She attacked you?” The principle asked suspiciously

She nodded. “We were just walking down the hall when she came up an pushed me aside”

All the other girls nodded in agreement except for Allie and Courtney. They were walking away from the scene, probably to try and find Amy.

Hannah noticed me standing in the shadows. “Tell your psycho friend to stay away from me!”

And with that the teacher led her off to the school nurse. I doubted she was that hurt and Hannah is known for over exaggerating.

Through the window I noticed a computer screen on. Amy must have been in there.

I walked in there and froze. There was the little snow globe standing by the computer. I rushed forward to see the screen and nearly had a heart attack. Google translate was open and the words I love you were in the bar.

Why had I gotten the snow globe engraved like that? It was a spur of the moment thing. Did I love her? I didn’t know. But I had to find her.

Amy

I heard footsteps approaching and I expected to see Allie and Courtney. Instead I nearly fell off my seat when I saw Nate. He sat down next to me so I stood up.

“Look, I’m sorry Amy-“

I cut him off angrily. “Why are you dating Hannah?”

It was his turn to be angry. “Because I want to”

“That’s a lie! You broke up with her!” I exclaimed.

He shook his head. “That was a mistake”

This was falling apart. “But the snowglobe-“

His eyes were filled with sorrow. “Amy, I really thought it said keep smiling, it was a mistake”

I could feel my eyes watering a bit. “Hannah said I couldn’t be your friend while you dated her. So who’s it going to be?”

My ears wanted to hear him say my name instantly. But he didn’t. I looked at him and saw him hesitate. He wasn’t answering and that made my heartbreak.

“Is that how it is? All those years of friendship to be replaced by a stupid blonde-“

He shook his head. “No Amy, don’t think of it like that. It’s just that I don’t think I’m good for you. We shouldn’t be friends....” He seemed to choke a bit.

Now my eyes were definitely watering. How could he say that?

“But…you said…and I…” My voice was leaving me and my throat was choking up.

He looked like he was in pain. He should be. Giving up his best friend like this.

I shook my head. “I’m giving you one last chance. Don’t pick her, think of our friendship! How can you throw that away? For no reason? Because you think that you’re holding me back?” I said quite loudly. “I need you Nate”

I looked in his eyes and saw sadness. He looked to the ground then back at my face.

“I’m sorry Amy”

I backed away slowly, not believing. My face had tears running down it now. Just when I’d thought our friendship had grown stronger, he gets rid of me.

“I’m sorry too” I muttered before running off.

Not looking back.
