Waking in Confusion

The girl sat up muttering something in a language I didn't understand

"Wait if your Fred, then that's Olav"

I looked at the girl who was now sitting up

"Olav?"

"What? Wait how do you know my name?"

I showed him my iron cross and he looked confused

"Karl"

I muttered giving him a hint, as a wave of realisation hit him

"What the hell happened?"

"Look I don't know but..."

I gave Olav the mirror and he looked incredibly confused. But we were cut short by the noise of an engine that I assumed to be a tank, searching my pockets I looked for my grenade just in case, but I didn't have it and as the vehicle came over I saw it was some sort of agricultural vehicle and upon seeing us he pulled something out of his pocket tapping it before putting it to his ear

I sat in an incredibly blank room, waiting for the police officer to come back, coincidentally the local law enforcement had shown up in a very futuristic-looking automobile. The officer walked back in and began speaking in some foreign language that I somehow understood

"May I see your ID please"

"ID? What's an ID"

"Your identification miss"

"Who're you calling miss!"

I shouted getting angry but the officer looked calm and once again asked for my ID

"I don't have this 'ID' you talk about"

"In that case do you have the phone number of a carer or guardian?"

"Phone? Oh telephone, we don't have one"

"Right"

He wrote something on his paper

"How old are you? What's your name?"

"Karl Vogel im 16 years old"

"Karl Vogel?"

He said looking confused

"Place and date of birth?"

"Dresden, Germany, February 14th 1929"

The officer looked at me attempting to hold back laughter

"May I remind you lying to a law enforcement officer is illegal"

"What date is it?"

I asked

"January 12th 2022"

I looked at him confused but I needed to be serious and quick thinking or I could end up in trouble

"To be honest my parents died in a car crash and I had nowhere to go"

The officer wrote something down before leaving me alone in the room as I wondered where the other two had gone, a few minutes later I was taken into a room with Olav and Fred and we realised we had all told similar stories, soon enough a police officer came in

"Well seem as neither of you have a legal guardian you will be sent to a state-sanctioned school under new identities to avoid bullying or other unforeseen atrocities"

He said handing us a piece of paper which reminded me of that time 77 years ago

"Take it to the reception desk of the hotel across the street they'll show you to your rooms, you will meet here tomorrow morning to receive your IDs and be given a guardian who will take care of you outside of school"

As the officer finished talking we left the station and walked across the road entering the hotel

"Good afternoon, what can I get you?"

I handed her the paper

"Ah a pre-booked receipt, you're in room 237"

The receptionist smiled handing me a thin piece of plastic

"Enjoy your stay"

She smiled
