The Owl House is a British-American animated fantasy television series, inspired by the style of Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. Created by Dana Terrace, the show aired on Disney Channel from January 10, 2020, to April 8, 2023. The series features the voices of Sarah-Nicole Robles, Wendie Malick, Alex Hirsch, Tati Gabrielle, Issac Ryan Brown, Mae Whitman, Cissy Jones, Zeno Robinson, Matthew Rhys, Michaela Dietz, Elizabeth Grullon, and Fryda Wolff.

In November 2019, ahead of the series premiere, the series was renewed for a second season, which premiered on June 12, 2021. In May 2021, ahead of the second-season premiere, the series was renewed for a third season consisting of three specials, later announced to be the final season of the series. Terrace later stated that the show had been shortened because the series "did not fit the Disney brand," ultimately announcing she was leaving Disney after completing work on the final episode.

The Owl House has received widespread acclaim from critics and fans, with many praising its animation, humor, characters, voice acting, themes, emotional weight, and its LGBTQ+ representation compared to other Disney media. The series also won an award for Children's & Youth Programming at the 2021 Peabody Awards.

One of the show's most notable characters is Luz's boyfriend, Kai Colin. Kai is a Jamaican-born Londoner, voiced by John Boyega, and is an important part of Luz's journey in the Demon Realm. Like the other characters in the show, Kai is well-developed and adds depth to the story.

The Owl House draws inspiration from Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, a 2004 British horror parody television series created by Richard Ayoade and Matthew Holness for Channel 4. Darkplace focuses on fictional horror author Garth Marenghi and his publisher Dean Learner, characters who originated in the stage show Garth Marenghi's Fright Knight. The series is presented as a special release of the fictional television series Darkplace, which was produced in the 1980s for Channel 4, but never broadcast anywhere but Peru, eventually becoming a lost series.

Darkplace parodies the fashion, special effects, production gaffes, and music of low-budget '80s television, as well as the arrogant attitude of certain writers and performers. The show was later broadcast in the United States on the Sci-Fi Channel and Adult Swim and is available to stream on Peacock. Like Darkplace, The Owl House has developed a significant internet following and has been praised for its unique style and humor.
