the usual

It was already 10am and I was tapping my foot, waiting for him. He should be here any minute.

I started cleaning nonexistent dust from the table, making sure the three roses bouquet was perfectly sitted on the glass surface, waiting for its delieverer.

I heard the bell ring, meaning that someone entered the flower shop. It has to be him.

I sighed in relief when I saw the familiar face approaching me. He was wearing his black leather pants and a see-through shirt.

'Good morning, Damiano!' I greeted him with a smile.
'Hi cara.. the usual' he said giving me a short smile, then looking again at his phone.

He seemed concerned and absent and I couldn't stop but ask myself what could this man be sad about. I saw him many times before, every day for three months. Every morning he came to my flower shop and deliever a bouquet of three roses to the same adress, his girlfriend's. He had a fun personality, always making jokes and making my day a little better. That day was different though.

I wanted to start a conversation, since he was late, something very unusual coming from him. He always came at 8am, not a minute late. I also wanted to find out what was on his mind.

'You're late today, huh?' I said while writing a note with the adress, Via Nazionale number 46.
'Yeah.. he said putting his phone in his pocket. It's just I am a little concerned, Sorn.'

Oh wow, he just said my name.

'Why so?' I asked trying to write very neat and slowly, just to buy some time with him.
'My findanzata.. she is sick.' he sighed.
'I'm sorry to hear that, I said and showed him the bouquet. It's ready.' I said smiling sotfly.

I really was sorry. His girlfriend must be a really good one since this man comes every single morning to buy her flowers and deliever them to her house.

'Thank you' he said and handed me some money.

I nodded and smiled a little. I saw his lips slowly forming into a smile too. He greeted me, wished me a good day and left.

Now, all I had to do is wait for him to come back the next day.

My shift ended at 2pm, as usual. The other girl that worked at the flower shop was Victoria, a sweet girl with a unique personality. She had been working here for half an year already and we got along really well.

She entered the shop with a big grin on her face. She was a ray of sunshine and just like with Damiano, my whole day revolved around seeing them.

'Morning girl' she said and sat down at the table.
'Hey' I smiled.
'Was he here? He was, wasn't he?' she said wiggling her eyebrows.
'Who?' I asked even though I knew she meant Damiano. She thought I was in love with him or something.
'Damiano, duh' she said grinning.
'Oh yeah, he was. His girlfriend is sick, he was late today.' I said.
'That's unfortunate. Well, you should go home. I'll take over from here. Get some sleep, Sorn, you look really tired' she said giving me a sweet smile.
'Thanks, Vic. I will, no worries.'

I kissed her cheeks and left. I hated Vic for the way she just assumes that I fancy this man, but she had every right to. I did my research on him after the first week of seeing him every morning. It was just weird. How could someone be so in love? Victoria always disapproved me on this. She believed that true love exists and sometimes it's in front of you, but you act blind because you're scared.

I sighed in frustration and enter the building where the apartament that I share with my brother is. For my luck, the flower shop was just five minutes away from my home.

'Hi, Thomas' I said entering the small apartament.
'Hey, Sorn. How was work?' he asked.
'Nothing too special' I said and lifted up my shoulders.

He was reading a book in the living room. Even though we shared the same space it was always tidy. The only disturbing thing was the smell of cigarettes that was spreading all around the apartament, since we were both smokers and we didn't have a balcony.

'I talked to dad today' he smiled proudly.
'Yeah? And what did he say?' I asked taking my shoes off.
'He said that he missed us.. and asked if mom was ok.'
'If he missed us, Thomas, he would be here with us. Don't let him get in your head.' I sighed and sat next to him, lightning a cigarette.
'I don't get you, Sorn. You can't stand him, I don't understand why can't you forgive him.' he looked at me with begging eyes.
'One day you'll understand why, I smiled stroking his hair. How was school today?'
'Uh, I didn't go.' he said letting his head down.
'Oh wow, like sister like brother if I can say that.' I laughed.
'Don't tell mom.' he asked with pleading eyes.

Yeah, like she would give a fuck.

'I won't, but try visiting the school more often' I laughed and messed up his hair.

He smiled and went back to his book. He might not like to go to school, but this boy reads in a day more than I have read in a lifetime.

I went in my room and changed into more comfortable clothes. I light some candles and sat down at the desk, starting to write in my journal.

He was late today. His girlfriend is sick apparently. I wish her all the best in the world, even though I don't even know her name.
Thomas talked to dad and I wish I could tell him why I don't keep in touch with him. He's just a boy, I can't do this to him. I'd be a bad sister.
