Chapter 13

Jake

Standing in front of the long mirror in my room. Being in the rugby, I was used to looking pretty grim most of the time. With cut lips or black eyes most of the year. There was no point being too vain in this sport. And yet, without sounding arrogant, I never really had much trouble looking good. If anything, the more broken noses and broken cheek bones I got the ladies still didn't seem to mind.

I wasn't wild haired like Paul or clean cut like Jay either. I was somewhere in the middle. A suit with no tie kind of guy. Simple, yet stylish.

Taking one last look at myself, I walked out of the room and down the corridor when Jay called my name.

"Jake?" Jay yelled walking towards me.

"Hello brother" I smiled at him with a smirk.

"I see you got your bags from Connor" Jay looked me up and down in my suit. Obviously. Always the lawyer Jay.

"Yes Jay, hence why I'm looking so good" I spun around for him trying to lighten the mood but he just stared back at me blankly. "Yes little brother, one of the staff members kindly brought them up, with your lovely girlfriend's things"

"You were nice to her?" he scolded me. Was he kidding.

"I was a prince" I smirked, causing him to rolled his eyes at me. "My stuff was brought up ages ago. Are you only just going to ya room now?" I asked, pointing at his bags.

"I was trying to get Kate a different room" he said.

"Why?" I asked. "Shouldn't a girlfriend and boyfriend share in this day and age? That would been hard explaining to Mum and Da" I folded my arms lending on the wall.

"They wouldn't have needed to know. I couldn't get another room anyway so I guess we're sharing" he said putting his key in the door.

"Well she can always come sleep in my room. That way I can keep a close eye on her" I winked knowing it would annoy him. "Although you better knock. She may be naked" I grinned and laughed as he ignored me.

I walked down the hall to the flight of stairs, by now people were starting to arrive and the rooms were now filling with the rich toffs.

The difference between my family and most of these people were, they were posh higher class people were my family and I aren't posh. With our deep accents most of the guests couldn't understand me anyway. This got me out of many boring conversations about fishing or cricket, whatever these people like talking about.

I walked through the large ballroom which was filling with tables and chairs. There was drinks and food scattered around the room, I'll be attacking that later I thought as I made my way through the back to the gardens. This place really was something.

As I looked around I thought back to what Kate said in the car 'I feel like I've stepped back in time, like I'm in a Jane Austen novel' she said then she did a little sigh, leaning on the car. She was right this place was like we'd stepped back in time. There was green everywhere you looked, with wild flowers and a large water fountain in the middle.

The green trees ware like her eyes. No hers were a little darker green...

WHAT?! Why was I thinking about Kate's EYES?!

It must be the heat out here. I need a drink, I thought and just on queue a waitress walked by with a tray of champagne. I took two, gulping one down to get my head back to earth again. I put the other glass back on the girls tray and she walked off.

Wait a minute! I didn't even make a pass at the young blonde waitress... What's wrong with me!

"Jake my boy!" a gruff voice called, as a hand hit my back. I turned to see Rupert Anderson.
