Her heart pounded heavily. "How could I marry the person I hate?" she asked, her voice steadier now though her eyes still betrayed her shock. The words hung in the air. Once, she had imagined marrying him with love in her heart. Now, the thought felt like a bargain made under duress.
Abhishek's gaze remained fixed on her, unreadable. "If you don't want to marry me," he said calmly, "then you'll have to stay with me in another way." Nalini's breath hitched. He paused deliberately just long enough to see the color drain from her face.
