INDIAN WOMEN IN SPACE
By _LibraChild_

"If you're doing mission operations you don't need to watch a science-fiction movie, we see the excitement in our day-to-day lives."
– Nandini Harinath, Project Manager Mission Design, Deputy Operations Director, Mars Orbiter Mission, ISRO.

Continuing the celebration of womanhood in this month's edition, I would like to bring 5 women who had contributed to space projects and it's extended fields.

Here is a list of women who contributed significantly in the field of science -

Minal Sampath
For over 2 years, Minal worked as a systems engineer for India's mission to Mars. She worked flat out without any leave in a windowless room to make our country proud and Mangalyan mission a success.

Kirti Faujdar
Kirti finds ISRO workplace friendly for women but is sad because of lack in their number. She is part of a team that monitors the satellites and the several other missions continuously.

N Valarmathi
As the project head of India's first indigenously-developed Radar Imaging Satellite, she was the first person to receive Abdul Kalam Award in 2015. She has been involved in many missions including Insat 2A, IRS IC, IRS ID, TES. She is the second woman scientist of ISRO to head a prestigious project.

Tessy Thomas
She is an engineer and the Project Director for Agni-IV missile in Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Tessy is the first woman engineer to head a missile project in India. She is known as the 'Missile Woman' of India.

Muthayya Vanitha
Vanitha's first job was that of the junior-most engineer. Former director of URSC convinced her to be the Project Manager of Chandrayan- 2, she worked tirelessly for 18 hours per day. Later, she became an integral part of Mangalyaan in 2013. She was awarded the Best Woman Scientist Award of the Astronomical Society of India in 2006 for her work and was also featured in the international scientific journal, Nature.

Most of the scientists of ISRO and other organizations still tend to stay away from the spotlight. But it's about time that we get to know them and their achievements.

MOMS BEHIND MOM
By NikkithaKJ

We have all heard the saying "Behind every successful man there is a woman!"

Well, not just behind a successful man, there are women in almost all the fields of studies. And, no matter what their field of study is, women go the extra mile and give in their best to make their projects successful. And, Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) is one such project.

The MOM was launched on 5th November 2013. Being India's first interplanetary mission did not stop India from becoming the first nation to reach the orbit of Mars in its first attempt.

About 27% of the personnel who worked on this magnificent project were women. Amongst other women, Moumita Dutta, Nandini Harinath, Ritu Karidhal, Anuradha TK and Mrinal Rohit were the women who led the mission from the front.

Moumita Dutta - The Indian scientist who contributed significantly in the development of one of the five payloads of MOM. She was also the Project Manager of MOM.

Nandini Harinath - She was a Deputy Operations Director of Navigation of MOM. She has also co-authored research papers on mission planning, analysis and operations.

Ritu Karidhal - She is also known as the "Rocket Woman" of India. She too was a Deputy Operations Director of Navigation of MOM. She has also been the mission director of Chandrayaan 2.

Anuradha T K - She is the first woman to become a satellite project director at ISRO. Apart from the MOM mission, she has worked on the launches of GSAT-10 and GSAT-12.

Minal Rohit - She was a part of the mechanical engineers on the MOM mission as a system integration engineer who helped in integrating and testing the sensors that the orbiter was carrying.

So, do you still think "Mars is for the men?" I certainly don't think so!

"Every woman's success should be an inspiration to another. We're strongest when we cheer each other on."
-Serena Williams.

SUDHA MURTHY
By anupamarrao

Sudha Murthy: Chairperson of Infosys Foundation, author, computer scientist and engineer, and social worker. Most importantly, the first woman in her college to join and graduate with a degree in engineering.

Sudha Murthy – Computer scientist, engineer and philanthropist .

Sudha Murthy née Kulkarni was born on August 19, 1950, in Shiggaon, Haveri district in northern Karnataka, to a professor of obstetrics and gynecology in Hubli and a former school teacher. She has three siblings, two sisters and a brother.

She did her primary schooling in a Kannada medium school which led to her immense love of the language. After finishing her PU course, she applied to the BVB College of Engineering & Technology (KLE Technological University) in Hubli in 1968. Her family members and the college staff weren't happy with this decision of hers of becoming an engineer.
In fact, there were many difficulties she faced while on campus: there was no "ladies' room" throughout her stay, she had to deal with catcalling and teasing. Despite these, she ranked first across all branches and graduated in 1972. Murthy even received a gold medal from the Institute of Engineers for her achievements in college. Continuing her education, she got her Master's degree in Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science with a distinction.

Murthy started her career in 1974 as the first female engineer hired at India's largest auto manufacturer, TATA Engineering & Locomotive Company, better known as Tata Motors. This was also where she met her future husband, NR Narayana Murthy. The duo got married in 1978 and their wedding cost a total of Rs.800 (approx. ₹18, 500 in 2020) that was split between the two families.

In 1981, NR Narayana Murthy decided to start Infosys and had told Sudha that she will have to earn for and manage the family as well as provide initial investment to him for the next three years. This meant that she had to stay away from her children most of the days. Eventually, she quit the technical team of Infosys and thought through her decisions from a mother's perspective.

Although she had quit the team of Infosys, she hadn't stopped lending a hand in the growth of the company. She even served as Head of Department, Computer Science at Bangalore University for a few years before resigning and becoming one of the first trustees of Infosys Foundation.

Infosys Foundation was established in 1996, 15 years after the company was founded, as a non-profit to fulfill the social responsibility of the parent company. The foundation focuses on supporting the underprivileged and programs in education, rural development, healthcare, arts and culture, and destitute care. To this day, the foundation finds every way to give back to society as much as it can.

Sudha Murthy is a role model for women of all ages and professions as she leads a simple and relatable life despite being one of the richest women in India. Every single initiative she works on with Infosys Foundation, she does it to serve her people and not for the monetary benefits of it.
