Flying Free (Poem)

In a dark and dusty land,

Many moons ago,

A woman sat silently,

Watching her dreams grow.

She knew the world disliked her,

Because she didn't fit the mould,

But that only made her more determined

To accomplish her end goal.

When word got round of what she planned,

People thought she was crazy.

She drove all doubts out of her mind,

And made sure she was ready.

Her feathery wings were on her back,

Her feet were about to leap down.

She remembered what she was fighting for,

And didn't think about turning around.

Now she was gliding through the air,

She had never felt more free!

She didn't hear the ground calling to her,

"Come back down to me."

No longer flying but falling,

She couldn't stop her pounding heart

Drawing her closer to where she feared to be,

Right opposite the stars.

The impact was painful,

When she fell with force

Onto the childhood

Home she adored.

But her heart was what burned

More than her smouldering face,

She had failed her mission,

She had lost this race.

She was no longer free,

Once she awakened.

Her body was broken,

Her mind fully aching.

A child's blood on her hands,

Deep scars in her head,

The only way she'd be free

Was by dreaming instead.
