Rapunzel pulls the statue out, places it on the alter, and grabs a large rock. She is prepared to smash the idol, when her eyes illuminate red again.
"Rapunzel, no!" Varian shouts. He rushes to her side as she begins to see another vision. He takes out his gloves that he has kept in his pocket since they first arrived on the island, and slips them on his hands. He attempts to procure the statue from her, but she has a firm grip on it and doesn't even seem to notice that he is there.
"I... I-I have to," Rapunzel tells her vision sadly, still holding the rock over the idol as lightning strikes behind her. Varian guesses she must be seeing her father again, and he is probably trying to convince her not to destroy the statue.
"Alright Blondie, hand it over!" Eugene shouts as he and the others reach the top of the temple. But they stop as they witness the scene before them.
"Please, I miss you all so much!" Rapunzel tells her vision. "But I have to do this."
"Let's get her while she's distracted," Cassandra says.
"No! You guys have to snap out of it and help her. Please!" Varian begs, but the others don't listen to him. So before they can reach her, he stands in front of Rapunzel protectively, his sword drawn. Pascal climbs on top of his head in a show of support, and Ruddiger growls at them defensively.
"Come on Hair Stripe, out of the way!" Eugene shouts.
"No," Varian says determinedly, aiming the sword at them as Rapunzel continues to argue with her vision. "I don't want to do this, but I will not let you get that statue."
Cassandra chuckles derisively, pulling her dagger out. "You really think you can keep me from getting that idol, kid? You barely even know how to hold that thing."
"Well, I have a good teacher..." He says sadly.
Cassandra rolls her eyes, and charges at him. He blocks her dagger with his sword, as Pascal leaps off of his head and onto Eugene.
"Get off me, frog!" Eugene yells.
"Cass, please! Think about what you're doing," Varian pleads, still blocking Cassandra's attacks. Even with just a dagger she is managing to back him up against the edge of the temple. He glances behind him, and realizes that a fall from this height would likely be fatal. "Trust me, I know how the idol makes you feel. I want to see my dad again too, so badly I can't stand it. But none of it is real!"
Cassandra keeps coming, but Ruddiger rushes at her. He attaches himself to her leg, trying to pull her back. But she simply shakes him off of her leg, sending him flying backwards across the ground. He rolls and skids to a stop, unconscious.
"Ruddiger!" Varian shouts worriedly, unable to get to his raccoon. He turns back to Cassandra and looks into her eyes, silently pleading with her. And for a moment he believes he can see her face softening.
Suddenly, Eugene manages to get Pascal off of him. He tosses the chameleon, who lands on Cassandra's head and pulls her hair. Angrily, she grips him in her hands. "You little—" But when she sees the fear in his eyes, she finally begins to come back to herself.
"...Cass?" Varian asks hesitantly as Rapunzel, still under the influence of the statue, finally realizes what is happening behind her.
"Guys, please!" The princess begs.
Cassandra puts her dagger away and turns to the others. "We have to help her destroy it. You wanna be like them?" She points to the Lorbs, who are rushing up the temple steps furiously with frantic clamoring.
Varian heaves a sigh of relief and sets down his sword. He, Eugene, and Cassandra each put a hand on Rapunzel's shoulders as the others fight off the Lorbs.
"It's okay Blondie, we're here to help," Eugene says.
Rapunzel nods, a new determination in her eyes. "You are not my father!" She screams at her vision. "You are just an illusion. The people I love are what make me happy, and I won't let you hurt them anymore! Happiness doesn't come from a thing, it comes from inside my heart!"
With the support of her friends around her, she finally manages to smash the idol with the rock. A blinding light shoots up from the alter as a strong gust of wind nearly blows them over. They all hold onto each other as the storm raging above them suddenly dissipates and then disappears altogether. The attacking Lorbs' eyes quit glowing, and they all return to normal as the moonlight shines upon them.
The gang heave a collective sigh of relief. "How are you feeling?" Eugene asks Rapunzel.
"Homesick," she replies. "But, I think I have a way to deal with it."
Varian now rushes to Ruddiger's side as the raccoon finally comes to. "Thanks for trying, bud," Varian says, picking him up and lovingly pressing his forehead against Ruddiger's.
Ruddiger smiles, but starts chittering angrily when he sees Cassandra approaching.
"Yeah, whatever you're saying... I deserve it," Cassandra says. "I'm... I'm sorry."
Ruddiger regards her skeptically, but then leaps into her arms.
"Whoa!" She says in surprise, reflexively catching Ruddiger as he embraces her with his tiny paws.
"I think he's forgiven you," Varian says with a chuckle, the scene before him warming his heart.
Together, they all head back down the temple and into the Lorb village. The Lorbs suddenly erupt in a loud cheering.
"The idol of Vershaftsbezeigungengien has been destroyed!" Alfons announces excitedly. "Let us celebrate!"
"Oh great, another party," Cassandra says as the Lorbs again light bonfire and begin to play their music, but she is smiling as she says this. As they all sit around the fire, Rapunzel heads into the darkness alone.
"Where you going, Blondie?" Eugene asks.
Rapunzel smiles. "I'm going to send off a lantern, with a letter to my father. I think it will help me feel better."
While she's gone, Lance and Hook Foot start doing their dance again while Eugene and Cassandra clap for them. Varian watches them for a moment, entertained by their antics. But he finds his attention drifting back to Cassandra. He clears his throat, and once he gets her attention he tells her, "I'm sorry for pulling my sword on you earlier."
She puts her hand on his shoulder. "It's okay kid, I get it. I wasn't myself. You were protecting Rapunzel. It's pretty cool, actually."
He blushes at the compliment, but shakes his head. "Yeah, I was actually referring to earlier today when we were all fighting each other for the statue."
Cassandra shrugs. "None of us were ourselves, Varian. Don't worry about it."
He smiles, but his heart practically stops when she stands up and extends her hand to him. "Now, how 'bout another dance?"
He eagerly accepts, and the two of them dance around the fire as the Lorbs cheer them on.
Soon, Rapunzel returns and she looks like she's finally back to her normal self. She and Eugene join the dance, and after the Lorbs play a couple of songs they even switch partners —Cassandra with Eugene, and Varian with Rapunzel.
"I just want to say thank you for helping me earlier," Rapunzel tells him as they step to the beat. "Even when I know you were mad at me. And also, I'm sorry..."
"J-Just forget about it," Varian says.
"But I don't want to 'just forget about it'," Rapunzel says. "I don't want you to think that I don't trust you. You've given me a lot of reasons to trust you again"
"Then why did the idol make you see me?" Varian asks.
"Who knows?" Rapunzel says with a shrug. "It made me see my father in a way that isn't really him, too. It was trying everything to keep me from destroying it."
Varian isn't sure he completely agrees with her logic, but he decides to let it go for now. He has come a long way since they left Corona, and he doesn't ever want to become that kind of person again.
"Hey, you two look too serious over there!" Cassandra says as Eugene swings her around.
"Yeah, come on, it's a party!" Eugene adds with a wide grin.
"Heh, Cass must really be in a good mood to be dancing with Eugene," Varian laughs. He spins Rapunzel around, and she takes notice of the glowing expression on his face.
"You seem to be in a better mood too," Rapunzel says. "Could it have something to do with a certain someone?"
Varian blushes, knowing that Rapunzel is teasing him about dancing with Cassandra. "Eh, maybe this island isn't so bad after all," he tells her. "It's... It's good to see you happier, too."
The gang celebrate late into the night, until they are almost too exhausted to move. They return to their shelter, happy and content, ready to take on whatever may come next —together. Varian still misses his dad more than anything, and this whole experience has only intensified those feelings. But he knows that his friends can help him to endure.
