The little one hesitates on the way to his mattress but as we hear the boys talking faintly, just the murmur not any words, he settles down. He was intimidated by me this morning, even if he's adorably shy with everybody, but we have established I'm no guy to be afraid of.
I keep my mouth shut, not wanting to make August uncomfortable with attention on him. If he's staying for enough, we'll all get used to each other.
When their door opens again and Jared leaves out, a cigarette in his mouth which I know already isn't like him and ignoring us with a grumpy face, August jumps up and goes in. I'm not surprised at all that the little one likes and trusts Dan the most.
It's been a while since I've been this involved in a teenage drama. Alone again, my thoughts wander to the other case at hand. I feel utterly ridiculous, replaying such a short, apparently however extraordinary, encounter with a youngster who's lived up to his name.
Mid-life crisis shouldn't come yet, but maybe I've caught it earlier. Awesome. I've thought about going back home, but then I also realise as a sensible adult that it wouldn't solve anything really. My head is too deep in the gutter already.
I grab my phone from the table, unlock it and go to messages. I'm worried about those boys, to be honest. I know Wilder is ignoring me, but maybe if I asked about his friends, he'd reply. I don't know who else to ask, anyway, so I'll give it a shot.

Me: -Hey, I hope you'll have a good weekend ahead.
9.19 PM, -I see you're still ignoring me but I'm asking now about your friends. Jared just left without Dan and I've been worried about those two lately.
