That was it. Just a few corners left and Lewis would win the championship. A few metres. And here goes the chequered flag. Lewis Hamilton was world champion for the 5th time. He was one of the 3 greatest Formula 1 drivers in history.
The whole Mercedes crew jumped and shouted. It was no surprise, it was expected. But you can never know, that's the beauty of this sport. You jumped in Toto Wolff's arms and were congratulated by each member of the team. Mercedes was not champion yet, but they will be, it was almost done.
Lewis was handed a British flag and he did one last run on the circuit, waving the flag, before parking his car in front of the arena where most of the Mexican supporters were. He was joined by Max Verstappen, winner of the race, and Sebastian Vettel. The three were being interviewed by David Coulthard. You couldn't take your eyes away from the screens showing your boyfriend. He wore that big smile you liked so much and talked like the fair-play guy he was.
After celebrating in front of the fans, the three drivers joined the cool room to have a drink, freshen up and put their Pirelli cap on. The whole Mercedes team parked under the podium, ready to acclaim their champion. Lewis' pit-crew made sure to secure yourself in front of the barrier so that you could see your boyfriend. You had the time to change into a Mercedes green shirt celebrating the title of Lewis, and you were also wearing his black cap. You were looking like any fan.
It was the euphoria when Lewis came onto the podium. Max Verstappen had won that day, but no one cared because all the attention was on your boyfriend winning a new title. After the national athems, the drivers sprayed themselves with champagne, before another round of interviews.
Lewis winked at you as he was patiently waiting for his turn. You shook your head and chuckled. You hair was wet because of the splash of champagne. But you didn't care. You were the proudest person in the world right now. You still didn't realise how great he was this year.
"Lewis, you are a five-time world champion. Can you realise that?" David asked Lewis after Max and Seb left the podium.
"Ah, honestly, I don't. I think it'll take a few days to settle in. You know, this has been an amazing year. I have to thank Mercedes, my pit-crew, Toto Wolff, my teammate Valtteri and the whole team back in the factory. But there's still the team's title to get and I won't rest until we have it. I'm determined to stay at the top to make the team proud."
"How happy are you right now?"
"The happiest. It's difficult to rank my titles, you know. Of course the first one, with McLaren, was huge. And the first one with Mercedes too. But the others as well. And now, a fifth title... I want to make history. That's my goal. And I'm on the way to make it. Honestly, the only think that could make me happier right now is if Y/N agrees to marry me." He laughed but looked at you, and you knew he was very serious in that moment.
You put a hand in front of your mouth to prevent a sound of surprise from coming out. Paul Ripke, Mercedes' community manager, was laughing like crazy into your ear and put a hand on your shoulder.
"Can someone help bring her here?" Lewis asked through his mic again.
Soon enough, two members of the FIA opened the barrier to let you enter the reserved zone around the cars. You turned to the team, not knowing what to do, and you saw Angela, Lewis' physio encouraging you to join him. So that's what you did.
You were escorted through the stairs to the podium. Everyone was clamming for you, the teams and the fans. Lewis took your hand and you mouthed a 'What's going on???' to which he only answered with a smile. You noticed he had a small blue box in his other hand.
"Oh my God." You muttered.
"I was planning to propose during our holidays in Grenada, but it just escaped me. So now that the cat's out of the bag, I might as well do this now. Y/N, you know I've won many races. Now I have 5 world titles. The only thing that I don't have and that I want dearly, it's you, for eternity." Lewis put a knee on the ground. Everyone was silent, quietly listening to the British's speech while Coulthard held the mic next to his mouth. "So, Y/N, will you marry me?"
You nodded as fast as you could and whispered a 'yes' that echoed through the circuit. The whole Mercedes team cheered loudly as well as the fans while Lewis slipped the gorgeous diamond ring on your finger.
"You just made me the happiest man in the world, Mrs Hamilton." He whispered against your lips after kissing them passionately.
"I couldn't be prouder of you, babe. My champion." You touched his cheek, tracing the marks left by his helmet.
"I don't care of the trophies anymore. You're the only one that matters."
