i leaned back against the sofa, daydreaming about my date tomorrow. this was gonna be my first date since high school, which was kind of sad to think about.
my high school boyfriend was actually a good guy. things just didn't work out because he had a childhood friend that liked him but he wasn't aware that he also liked her back. being the kind person i am, i broke it off with him and got them together. we still send about one email a month, updating each other about our lives, which is also how i know that the two are happily married now.
if only my love life was as easy as that, i thought to myself. it would be great just to have someone tell me what to do with my life. i'm so indecisive that it's nearly impossible. the only thing i'm ever certain of is my music.
i laid down on my sofa with the back of my hand over my forehead and my other hand across my abdomen. closing my eyes, i hoped to take a short nap to clear my head of my problems.
"rin? what are you doing?" my eyes snapped open, looking towards my door.
"minsik? what do you need?" i questioned, knowing that he has his own busy schedule.
"checking up on you. that's what best friends do, right?"
"yeah. it is, thanks. i'm fine. no need to worry," i claimed, giving him a weak smile.
he took a seat on my white office chair. "tell me that once your frown lines disappear."
"okay. so basically, i'm going on a date with gyujeong," i started, "and my mind is just malfunctioning because i haven't been on a date in forever and i'm sort of a nervous wreck," i ranted. minsik and i shared everything so i thought it was better to tell him than keep the date a secret. "also don't tell anyone because i want this to be a lowkey thing and i trust you."
"well first of all, as cliché as it sounds, be yourself. you're bound to make him laugh and smile just by talking to him. plus, it's gyujeong. he's a gentleman. he'll know how to treat you right and if you don't recall, you two do know each other so you should be comfortable around him," minsik reassured me.
"and the best friend of the year award goes to kwon minsik!" i announced with a closed-eye smile.
"obviously, you dork," he chuckled, "who else could it be?"
"well—"
"—nope, nevermind. don't answer it," he interjected, knowing that i was messing around with him.
"regardless, thank you for the advice, minsikie." i genuinely appreciated him taking the time to make sure i was fine.
"no problem, rin," he responded, "i'm gonna go now. i have to go meet up with sungwon soon." we waved goodbye and he exited my studio.

after his brief visit, i messed around with the lyrics in my notebook and worked on the composition of the songs. between lyric writing and just procrastinating, i tried to produce a track. secretly, i was getting lessons from woogie, gray, and cha cha malone on how to produce. i really wanted to make my new album better than all of the ones before it. the goal was not to be as good, but to improve.
it was a little past 11:00pm when i decided to take a small break and leisurely use my phone.

it had been 30 minutes since gyujeong texted me "brb". did i do something wrong? why is he gone for so long? i began to worry. wow, hyorin. you finally find a man and you've already driven him away. negative thoughts like these were drifting in my head.
"delivery here!" someone exclaimed from the other side of the door. delivery? i didn't order anything.
i cautiously opened the door, not knowing what to expect.
"you're here!" to my surprise, gyujeong was standing there with two bags in his hand. i wrapped my arms around his torso, giving him a hug. he tried to reciprocate it the best that he could given that he was still holding the bags.
"is this why you texted 'brb' to me?" i asked, trying to confirm my suspicions.
"i was worried that you weren't properly taking care of yourself so i brought tteokbokki, dumplings, kimchi fried rice, japchae, and chicken skewers."
"holy shit. you truly are an angel descended from heaven. i adore you so much right now," i praised whilst drooling over the food placed across my coffee table.
i gave gyujeong a final hug before seating myself. he chuckled at my excitement and eagerness to devour all of the food.
"you know, technically, this could be a date," i pointed out.
"yes, but it is not because one, i did not ask you properly and two, because i said so," he remarked. i chuckled at the second point.
"oh shush. eat up, loser," i playfully demanded.
we spent the next 1-2 hours just joking around and having a good time being in each other's presence. imagining what it would've been like if he had not surprised me left a depressing image. unfortunately, gyujeong ended up leaving around 1:00am which left me alone with just me and my thoughts.
if that "hangout" was that great, then our date will probably be better. right?
