N I A L L

I opened my eyes, groaning at the pounding in my head. I turned over in bed, hitting something warm. I was confused; Breana was out of town.

I looked at the bare girl in my bed in horror, remembering everything. I had gotten so drunk from missing Breana that I had done something horrible.

I scrambled out of bed and found my phone, ready to tell her what had happened. She would understand. Right?

I dialed her number, chewing on my nails nervously.

I heard a noise in the living room and wondered what else I had done. I continued waiting, hearing a phone ringing outside of my room, too.

I opened the door to investigate, coming face to face with Breana. We both hung up.

"Hey! I'm home," she smiled, a bright look in her eyes. I panicked.

"I need to tell you something," I rushed, about to lead her into the hall.

"Niall?" I heard the girl in my bed call. I locked eyes with Breana, feeling dread set in. I watched her eyes lose all of their previous brightness.

"Two weeks," she mumbled. "You can't be alone for two weeks?" she yelled, turning to run back down the hallway.

"Let me explain!" I called to her, following her footsteps.

"I don't need your explanation," she spat, grabbing a few of her things off of the counter.

"It's stupid anyway," she sniffled, tears running down her face. I reached out to touch her, but she winced away from me. My heart shattered.

"I was drunk out of my mind because I was missing you so much and-"

"Just save it!" she shouted, turning to grit her teeth at me. I tried to breathe, but I really just wanted to collapse.

"I think we need some time apart," she spoke, a nook in her voice. "It may be a week, it may be a year. Just..." she trailed off, glancing at me with the beautiful eyes I had learned to love. I hadn't told her I loved her yet.

"Goodbye," she sighed, exiting through the front door.

And then I did collapse.

.

The week crept by so slowly it might as well have been a year. My sleeping hours were two digits, my calorie intake was two digits on a good day, and my music volume couldn't have been higher. Tissue count was zero, but dark thoughts skyrocketed.

Hour after hour was a new torture. At one point, suicide came into the mix, but then Liam came over, so I couldn't think about that anymore. I was glad he took me away from that. He tried to cheer me up, but even him bringing me abit of food was the happiest I had been all week.

"Have you tried to tell her what really happened?" he asked me as we ate in silence. I gave up on my food when I felt like I was going to explode.

"No. She probably wouldn't listen," I deadpanned, my throat sore from living in silence. He stood up to leave.

"You never know," he shrugged, wishing me luck as the door shut.

About two hours and four Netflix episodes later, the doorbell cut through the air flowing towards my ears. I furrowed my eyebrows, wondering if Liam had forgotten something.

I tried to make my hair look decent, shoving it down. I pulled open the door, revealing the girl who had been in my bed. I almost puked on her.

"What do you want?" I sighed, leaning into the door. She smiled lightly.

"I heard what happened on Sunday, and I'm sorry. Do you remember everything that happened that night?" she asked me. I rolled my eyes.

"Why would I want to?" I spat, kind of hating her.

"We didn't have sex." My eyes met hers.

"What?" I asked in disbelief. She chuckled.

"You said we couldn't. You realized you had made a mistake and told me to go to sleep. Even when you're drunk you're loyal. I hope I find a guy like that. She's lucky," I watched her explain. My heart started up again for the first time, and I pulled her into a hug.

"Thank you so much, and I'm sorry I did that," I apologized awkwardly, rubbing the back of my neck. She smiled.

"It taught both of us a lesson," she shrugged. I waved her goodbye and found myself in all of my darkness.

I took a shower and put on something decent. I knew where Breana would be; she only had one friend who lived in town.

I got in the car, remembering the many times we went over for dinner.

I knocked on the door when I arrived, feeling nervousness tickle the back of my brain.

Michelle, her friend, answered the door.

"You shouldn't be here," she pointed out, looking sorry for me.

"Can you please let me talk to her?" I pleaded, needing to see her and set things right.

"You messed up," she sighed, shaking her head. I nodded, agreeing with her completely. She stepped aside to let me in, and I walked towards the guest bedroom; she had given me the tour of her house a few months ago.

I pushed open the door, and her eyes met mine. She looked terrible, if I was being honest.

"Breana," I sighed, feeling so stupid.

"Get out," she glared at me. I furrowed my eyebrows.

"Can you please let me explain?" I begged, closing the door and leaning on it.

"You have two minutes," she instructed, sitting on the edge of the bed.

"Saturday night I went to the bar with Greg and a few other guys. I was so ready for you to come home, and I was so lonely. So, I had a little too much too drink, you know how I am," I shrugged. A ghost of a smile approached her lips, but she pushed it away.

"I got drunk, and I took this girl home. The next morning I saw her and panicked. I tried calling you to explain but you came in and surprised me." She opened her mouth to speak, but I shook my head.

"There's one more important detail," I said. She stayed quiet.

"She came by this morning, telling me that we didn't do anything. She said I told her to go to sleep because I realized I had make a mistake and that we couldn't have sex," I explained. She didn't say anything, just stared at me.

"I don't..." She started, rubbing a hand over her face.

"I love you, Breana. I didn't quite know for sure before, but with one huge mistake and three weeks away from you, I'm positive. Please forgive me." She blinked at me, standing up. I took one step towards her.

"Well, I..." I smiled a little at her lack for words. I opened my arms for a hug, and that did it. She walked towards me, grinning, and stepped into my arms.

"I'm sorry, too," she sighed. I pulled her tighter against me.

"When was the last time you took a shower?" I teased, letting her go. She hit my arm, trying to hide her smile.

"It doesn't matter anymore," she spoke, shaking her head. I leaned closer to her and kissed her, feeling the bonds between us become unbreakable.
