The wind was blowing hard and the smell of spring filled the air. Five year old Jay was sitting in the grass, watching his soon to be step-brother Christian run around. The two got along so well. Their divorced parents were going to get married and join them, making them brothers.
Until one day...
"I'm so tired of you shit, Erica!" the boys hear Ethan, Christians father, yell.
"Oh, you're tired of me, Ethan? Grow up." She slaps him across the face and walks over to Jay. She crouches down and takes his hand. "Come on baby, we're leaving."
"But, I'm playing with Christian," Jay says, pointing to a disappointed Christian.
"We'll talk about it later, come on. Say goodbye to Christian for now." Erica forces a smile. Jay stood up and walked over to Christian and gave him a hug.
"I'll see you later, okay?" Christian reassured him. Jay nodded and made him pinky promise. Jay then walked away with his mother, never to see him again.
At least, not for a while.
