Bucky woke with a start. Another nightmare had taken over and captured his mind. It was a regular thing, now it only happens once or twice a week. But whenever he had one, (Y/N) was always there to calm him. Some were easy to recover from, others weren't. Some took him all night to stop shaking, others took him a few seconds or minutes. But now was different.
Bucky was shaking violently, his eyes were streaming and he was petrified. His breathing was unbalanced and every breath was short and quick. His head had landed in his hands as he continued to shake. He turned to his left to see (Y/N) slowly getting up, addressing the situation at hand with caution. She wasn't scared, just worried for both of their safeties.
She reached out a protective hand and gently placed it on Bucky's shoulder. He looked down at it as if she had just killed someone he loved, then looked up and saw her glistening eyes. (Y/N) wanted Bucky to calm down, know he's safe with her. But sometimes he doesn't feel it, he knows, doesn't feel.
"Hey," she moved closer to him, "it was just a bad dream. It's okay to be scared"
"You died (Y/N), it was my fault. I couldn't save you" his voice was quiet and hoarse. This one was bad. (Y/N)'s arm was now around Bucky's shoulders as she pulled him into her. His head was hung low on her chest and her head was on top of his. She gave him kisses every so often on his head while still embracing him.
"Come on. Let's lay down and try get to sleep, okay? Sound good?" Bucky nodded a reply. (Y/N) gently pulled him down and got him settled before laying down herself and snuggling into his side. His arms instantly wrapped around her, afraid someone would hurt her like in his dream. Sometimes, when he was being protective, he was scared he'd hurt her by accident, but (Y/N) always assured him he wouldn't.
"I love you" he whispered into her hair before kissing it.
I love you too, Buck" (Y/N) replied while moving closer to Bucky, if it was even possible. The two feel into a peaceful sleep with Bucky not waking up again. They had each other and at was all th-
Beep, beep.
Beep, beep.
Beep, be-
The annoying noise was cut short by Bucky slamming his metal arm on it. That the 3rd one that month. He grumbled as he woke and sat up realising what had just happened. He wasn't laid in bed with (Y/N). He hadn't woken up due to a bad dream. She didn't lay him down and settle him in. They hadn't whispered 'I love you''s to each other before falling asleep. He hadn't said those three words in years. And that was when he realised,
(Y/N) had been dead for years.
