_____

"Here comes Bubblegum Boy," I burst into laughter as he walks in, his hair a tinge of pink and blue.

The dye from my hair has slowly faded off, making my hair a pleasant strawberry blonde. "Good lord, Maya, strawberry blonde looks great on you," Riley grins as she reaches out a hand to put a stray strand of my wavy locks behind my ear.

"Not as great as pink and blue looks on Lookie Pookie!" I exclaim as I flick Huckleberry's nose behind me.

"Ouch!" He rubs his nose and shoots a glare at me. "I was trying to scare you."

"And you failed, you half-assed Huckleberry!" I grin, flicking him in the nose again.

I turn to Riley to see that she's looking at us with a funny expression. "Is everything okay, Riles?" I snap her out of her trance but she shakes her head to indicate that she's fine. She plasters an artificial smile on her face and before I can question her about what that was about, Matthews walks in to mark the attendance.

"Here," I mutter when he calls out my full name. Maya Penelope Hart. Thank God I kept my father's last name. The one thing he's good for. Imagine Maya Penelope Clutterbucket. I shudder mentally.

As he reads towards the end of the list, his face brightens up as if he forgot something and he grins like an excited puppy. Okay, I know puppies don't grin, but could you try imagining that? How cute would that be?

"We have two new students today!" He claps his hands together like a retarded seal. "Let's welcome Missy and Malcolm!"

Ha, Missy is such a dumb name. Only for rich prudes who go to private school. And John Quincy Adams High School is no private school. And Malcolm? Yes, that too.

My jaw drops as they walk up.

She was skinny but had a huge rack - probably fake if you ask me - which she didn't bother covering; and a tight skirt hugged her huge posterior. Her face caked with thick makeup, she clambers to the front of the class in huge pink stilettos that go higher than the Empire State Building.

But he, he was absolutely stunning with tousled hazelnut brown hair and chestnut brown eyes that you could easily drown in. Everybody can see his toned muscles from his tight-fitting shirt as he flashes a pearly white smile that seemed to brighten up the whole room.

Holy crackers - was I just swooning? Someone slap me in the face. Because Maya Hart does not swoon.

And just as about I was bringing my hand to my face, a high-pitched voice did that job for me, bringing me back to my senses.

"My name is Missy Bradford, and my Daddy is the CEO of Bradford Bank and Co.," she boasts, puffing her chest a little, but proceeds to twist her face into a scowl, muttering, "And I can't believe he made me come to this wretched peasant's school."

Everybody gapes at her.

"Oops, I must have said that out loud," she drawls sarcastically.

She then scans her eyes over the class, and narrows them on Lucas. "At least there're some cuties here," she winks at him.

Somebody hand me a bucket, I think I need to puke.

Lucas blushes a deep shade of red, and I can't help but feel a pang of anger. So much for those "Rucas Forever!" hearts on the back of Riley's diary back in middle school, I wonder where that notebook went, and how her feelings dissipated for Lucas so quickly. I guess I'll just have to ask her about it someday.

"And I'm Malcolm, her twin brother," Malcolm interrupts. "And I'm happy to be here," he adds, as if fearing that people might think of him like his sister.

Missy rolls her eyes and walks back to her seat behind Lucas, eyeing him like he was a piece of meat. And Malcolm takes the seat beside me - on my left.

Throughout history lesson, I can't help but turn around every few minutes - okay fine, seconds - to see if Missy's still trying to seduce poor Lucas. I swear I heard her whisper to him, "You look good even with your ridiculous pink hair."

Barf.

Soon, the bell rings. What can I say? Time flies when you're watching a snobbish brat try to seduce an uninterested cowboy.

I go to my lockers to collect my books for my next lesson and almost flip when I see Missy Brat-ford standing there flirting with Lucas as he tries to get away.

Ha, Brat-ford, good one, Maya.

"Ahem," I clear my throat to get her attention. "Get out of my way."

"Who do you think you're talking to?" She hisses venomously as if I were a cockroach.

"You're standing at my locker, idiot." I shove her aside and begin to punch in my locker combination.

"How dare you call me idiot?" She almost-screeches at me, attracting a huge crowd. Yay, attention. Yes, I know I attract attention a lot, but I don't want people to see me in a cat-fight with some arrogant aristocrat.

"Oops," I sneer as I lean in closer to her face as if daring her to say something else.

"Get away from me, you lesbian," she spits out, disgust spreading across her scrunched up face.

"Says the one who was shoving her boobs into everybody's faces," I retort before she can come up with another insulting comment.

"Um, is there a problem here?" our conversation is interrupted by somebody behind us.

I turn around to see Malcolm standing millimetres away from me. My cheeks tinge a slight shade of pink as I back off a little and turn back to Missy.

"Mal, this little piece of bull crap thinks she can talk to me. Ugh," she flips her long brown hair over her shoulder, whacking Lucas in the face. I snicker a little.

"What?" Missy snaps at me, only to get a halfhearted shrug out of me.

"Could you stop behaving like that, Missy?" Malcolm massages his temples, obviously annoyed by his sister's stupidity. She gasps exaggeratedly. What a drama queen.

"Um, I have to go, so I'll see you all later. By the way, Missy, loving that new nose job you did!" I wink.

I slam my locker shut as I strut away from the aftermath of what just happened, leaving a very fuming Missy Bradford behind.

"What a homophobe," Riley scoffs, "what's wrong with bisexuals anyway?"

"She said lesbian though," I raise an eyebrow at her.

Her eyes widen and she lets out a nervous laugh, wringing her hands together. "It's not like, uh, we know any bisexuals around."

"Um, okay."

"Apparently, she was humiliated. A video of the whole thing is trending on the school website."

I smirk, folding my arms. "She deserved it."

But why I felt so much anger bubbling at the pit of my stomach when I saw her at my locker with Huckleberry, I can't possibly comprehend.

"What are you? Mute?" Riley frowns at me. "Say something!"

"Oh, sorry, Peaches," I smile sheepishly. "Just distracted."

"You're oblivious, aren't you?"

I look at her, confusion spreading across my face. "What to?"

She laughs and I look at her, her eyes sparkling with a newfound mysteriousness as she curves her lips into a smile. "You'll find out soon enough."

And I swear, under her breath, she says, "Shortstack."
