Featured Lyrics:

(this is a MUST listen T_T)

Well, I couldn't stand to be in that place
I was just about to leave when I saw your face
You were laughing at me with your beautiful mouth
You said, "You're looking miserable, do you wanna get out?"

When you're only eighteen and you have nothing to lose
And you're living a dream with the sand in your shoes
You said falling in love is easy, it's easy to do

We fell in love with the windows rolled down
Chasing the sunset through another empty town
Your hair was a mess when you would dance on the coast
Your silhouette like some heavenly ghost

Summer skies and warm colored sunsets
And a sunrise sneaking through my blinds
My demise, well, I just can't help but feel so lost

Falling in love is easy to do with the wind in your hair
And the sand in your shoes and though it may hurt
To have your heart broken in two
That didn't stop me from falling for you

Yeah, when you're dancing on the beach
Where the water meets your feet
And a cool ocean breeze is fighting the heat
Falling in love is easy, It's easy to do
It's easy to do, Oh, I'm falling for you

"Introducing the class of 199X!"

You stood in line wearing your robes and cap outside of the grand hall that you and your fellow high school graduates would walk through to your seats. You were surrounded by some familiar faces, of people who shared the same first initial of your last name. They were people that you've stood next to through years of alphabetical lineups. They were people who sat around you during standardized tests. They were people who you'd probably never see again. As the line began to shuffle forward, you looked around the line to try and see your friends. You saw Mikasa near the front, looking back at you down the line a second before passing through the double doors.

It wasn't much longer until you were walking in, seeing the flashes of cameras and lights as troves of family and friends beaming at the line of black and green robes. You felt like an insignificant speck in the long line of graduates. You tried looking for your table of guests only to make awkward eye contact with someone's grandfather and to wave at someone who shared the same haircut as your mother.

Almost militaristically, the line filled in the rows of chairs one by one in front of a large stage with a single podium. It had been a long day of standing in your heels and heavy robes and the relief of the foldable chair that squeaked below you was a welcome sensation.

You sat amongst your peers, listening to the endless ramblings of motivational speeches. Bold statements of "achieving your dreams" and "we are so proud of you" and "the sky's your limit" filled your head. Although they felt like empty statements, you couldn't help but feed into the endless potential for the rest of your life.

As you lined up behind the stage, you listened to the names of your peers being called one by one. "I hope I don't trip. I hope the principal says my name right. I hope I get decent applause.' You weren't sure where your thoughts were coming from as you inched closer and closer. You had watched this moment in so many movies and read what it felt like in books. It always seemed like a magical moment that would thrust you into adulthood.

You blinked as you heard your name being called and announced into the microphone. Another blink and you were shaking hands with the principal you barely talked to as he passed a rolled paper to you. Another blink and the student body president, Marlowe, moved the tassel on your cap from the right to the left. Another blink and you were back where you started, sitting amongst your peers, watching the rest cross the stage. You wondered if it should've felt more special. You wondered if you were meant to feel sparks come alive. You wondered if Eren was sitting in these rows of foldable chairs if it would've felt like you hoped.

"Mikasa Ackerman!"

"Sasha Blouse!"

"Jean Kirstein!"

"Connie Springer!"

You made sure to clap and cheer the loudest and you knew that somewhere in the crowd that green-eyed boy would be doing the same.

As the names continued on, there was a significant part of you that wished Eren's first and last name would be called at the very end, like a surprise. But as the pile of rolled diplomas shrank and the graduates refilled the rows of foldable chairs, you knew that you would never see him cross the stage. As you tossed your cap into the air, you did your best to keep track of it in the sky. You had to admit that you didn't toss it very high to keep it in your sight.

Once the ceremony commenced, you got up from your seat and did your best not to get trampled by the enclaves of graduates. The sounds of celebration and high-pitched cheers only motivated you to move faster. As you walked out of the grand hall and into the foyer, you tried your best to find the spot you promised to meet your guests at. It didn't take very long for you to catch sight of your mother standing next to Carla who was standing next to Eren. You had to admit, seeing him wearing a black suit and burgundy tie made your heart jump out of your chest. You ran up to the group, holding your arms open for a big hug, realizing that you hadn't seen them since the morning.

"Congratulations, Y/N!" your mother beamed, giving you a tight hug that nearly knocked your cap off your head. Thankfully Eren stood right behind you to catch it.

"Thank you for inviting me, sweetie," Carla said as she lifted one hand off her walker. "It's such a special day." You gave her a gentle hug that felt more like you were holding her up. You knew that even though her son wasn't graduating, there was something that compelled you to make sure she was there. As she lowered her arms back to the walker, she gave you one more lasting smile before giving Eren a not-so-subtle side-eye.

Your gaze turned upwards toward him as he held your cap in one hand and a fist full of daisies in the other. With a crooked smile, he offered you the flowers and you took in the sweet, fresh smell. You glanced over at your mother who seemed to be smiling more than you. He took the cap in both hands and placed it back on your head. Keeping his hands on the sides of your jaw, he lead you into a gentle kiss. "Congratulations, love. You didn't trip like you thought you would."

You snorted, pushing his chest away. He looked so out of place, standing in a crowd of robes worn by people you grew up with. You wondered if he held any resentment inside. It was hard to tell just from the look in his eyes.

"Y/N! Eren! There you guys are!" a voice called out. You looked in its direction to see Sasha waving you both toward the rest of your friends.

"Hey everyone, you look great!" Eren said, pulling each of them into a hug. "The green and black robes suit you all."

"You should've been up there with us, man," Connie whined. "I can't believe a dumbass like me graduated before you did."

Eren playfully punched Connie in the arm. "Hey, you're not a dumbass. You're smarter than people think."

"Yeah, I missed seeing your face in class," Jean joked, wrapping an arm around Eren's neck, and pulling him underneath his armpit. "If you had shown up more often you could've been freed from the walls of that goddamn high school.

You tried to watch Eren's expression as Jean and Connie relentlessly teased him, poking at his sides and ruffling up his hair. Although they were trying to make light of the situation, you noticed the way Eren's eyes avoided eye contact as he kept his eyes to the ground.

"Alright, alright you fuckers," Eren laughed, fixing the furrowed eyebrows on his face. He stood up straight, using a palm to press Jean and Connie back. For once, Eren didn't have a witty statement or a joke, bringing the moment into a dull lull.

Mikasa stepped up saying, "I think Jean's family wants to have lunch with me and my godfather before the banquet tonight. So we should probably head out soon."

"Ah, that's right! I just left Nicolo to go to the bathroom and I totally forget to go back for him!" Sasha suddenly realized, holding her palms to her cheeks.

As you watched your friends turn away, you grabbed both of their hands. "Let's all take a picture in our robes before you go. I think my mom has my camera."

Sasha beamed, "That's great! I feel like I haven't seen you use your camera in a while."

You smiled shyly, realizing that you hadn't taken enough pictures throughout the school year to develop the roll in the canister. You grew curious about what memories were being locked inside. Some were from the early fall, the beginning of senior year. Others were taken at Jean's parties or sleepy nights studying together. You knew you had quite a few from your time Dauper. When you made it back to the same area where your mother and Carla still stood, you glanced at the number of shots you had left. There were only five shots left. The rest of summer was still ahead of you and every shot you would decide to take had to be precious.

You positioned each of your friends in a row as they held their arms across each other's backs. Just as you were about to pass the tripod to your mother, you noticed that Eren was standing just out of frame. "Eren, move in closer."

It was like he straggled behind the group, watching them carefully from a distance. You could see that his shoulders were slightly downturned, his eyes were gazing lightly over each of his friends, and his lips were pursed into a tight line. He looked up like he was shocked. "Huh? Oh...right."

After adjusting the settings to the lighting and framing the shot at the perfect angle, you stepped back from the viewfinder to find your place between Sasha and Eren's shoulders. Before fully positioning yourself, you took the cap off your head and placed it on Eren. You noticed his dejected face as everyone around him readied their smiles of celebration for the camera.

"Remember what you told me? Some parts of our lives won't be exactly the same." You lifted your hand to his cheek to guide his eyes back to yours, feeling the warmth of his skin below your palm. "Just because we're all not finishing at the same time, doesn't mean your journey didn't matter. You were always there with us and you always will be. You're not going to be left behind."

Eren laughed like he wasn't surprised to see you standing at the top of the hole he was burying himself in. "Thank you," was all he said before turning to the camera with a big smile. There were only four shots left on the roll of film.

✧・゚: *✧・゚:*

Eren sat at the edge of your bed, watching you touch up your appearance. He tried to memorize your routine of patting on foundation, jealous of the liquid that touched your cheeks. He wished that it was his lips against you instead of your shiny gloss. He couldn't help but watch your brush that ran across your scalp and through the ends of your hair, wishing it was his fingers that smoothed down the edges. You were enjoying watching him in the mirror as he squirmed behind you.

You gave him a smirk before walking out of your bedroom and into the bathroom where your dress was hung. There was still some hesitation in exposing your body to Eren despite the way he worshiped it with his touch. You were comfortable with feeling the sensation of his hands dragging across you in the dark, under covers, out of sight. You knew he was holding back, waiting for your permission, waiting for you to open up.

You glanced at the dress that hung on the back of the door, marvelling at the soft yet sparkly material that seemed to dance, even in the bathroom lights. The colour matched the burgundy tie that hung loosely around Eren's neck. After draping the straps over your shoulders, you struggled to reach behind you to zip up. Holding the cups of the dress against your breasts, you walked back into the room to see that Eren had laid back in your bed. He was only staring at the ceiling and you could see that his eyes were tracing the patterns of the plaster.

He didn't look at you as you walked in, saying, "I noticed our hand prints are still on the ceiling. From when you first moved to this house." You looked up to see where he was staring to find small specks of paint right above your bed.

You were suddenly hit with the memory of your eighth birthday, of you and Eren competing to touch the ceiling first. You coated your hands with paint to make your mark. Despite being the same height as children, Eren's paint-covered hand touched the plaster first. When you became teenagers and hit your growth spurt before he did, you managed to beat him then. You realized that you hadn't competed to reach the top since then.

As the years continued on, Eren's growth surpassed you easily and he quickly towered over you. His confidence grew and there was always a glint in his eyes that said he would be the first to break out of the confines of any ceiling. You always thought that his dreams of travelling the world, being free, and living a long life of happiness were just out of reach. He only had to grow just a little more.

Eren seemed to be lost in his mind as he held a single arm up, reaching for those painted hand prints. He sighed, "We used to be so small." He finally pivoted his head to look at you with your hands against your breasts to hold your dress up. The pink on his cheeks was quick to spread, as he sat up suddenly. Whatever innocent memories he had floating in his mind, were quickly replaced with the sight of you standing before him.

"Can you help me zip up?" you turned around to expose your shoulders to him as you glanced backwards.

You could hear him audibly gulp as he stood off the bed to walk towards you. "Of course, love." Eren's hands snaked around your exposed shoulders dragging along the dots and freckles that littered them. The texture of your skin was always a little rough there, but Eren placed his lips like he treasured every single new sensation. Your hands reflexively moved to cover the discolouration, and Eren easily brushed your fingertips away as he continued gentle pecks across your shoulders. "They look like stars, like constellations."

Eren dragged his hands down your back, savouring the sight just before pinching the tiny zipper that sat right above your ass. You could practically feel his eyes tracing back up as the zipper sealed you shut. Just as you were about to turn around to face him, you felt the cold sensation of thin metal wrapping around your neck.

"What's this?" you asked, placing a hand on the small gemstone against the top of your sternum. You finally turned around, to see Eren looking down at you with a gentle smile.

"It's just a graduation gift, something you can remember me by."

Walked to the mirror in your room to see a small emerald hanging from your neck. It wasn't too much of a dark veridian and it wasn't too much of a light cerulean. As you turned to watch the light sparkle from within it, you realized that it was the perfect colour to match those beautiful green eyes you loved so much.

You nearly felt yourself tear up as Eren placed his body behind yours, resting his head on your shoulder. Looking at each other in the mirror, you enjoyed the sight of his proximity and the feeling of his arms wrapping around your waist from behind. Turning to face him, you kept a protective hand on the gem. You whispered, "Thank you, Eren. I love it...I love you." Although the keepsake was now precious to you, nothing compared to seeing the eyes that inspired the earth to create such a beautiful colour.

✧・゚: *✧・゚:*

You watched as Eren gripped a stiff hand around the steering wheel, not listening to any music over the loud sounds of his truck. The streetlights danced as you passed by each one, dragging a repetitive pattern over the dashboard and across his face. You held his other hand, resting it on top of your lap. If it hadn't been for the long gown that draped across your legs, you knew that your fingers wouldn't be strong enough to hold his teasing hands from slipping them between your legs. You were on your way to your high school graduation banquet with a tinge in your heart and the most important person in your life.

Your mother and Carla stayed at home for the evening, keeping each other company. The banquet was mostly meant for the student's celebration or for any rowdier parents that wanted to dance. You were more than okay with your mother staying behind to take care of her friend whose husband was once again away.

You twirled the gemstone between your fingers, feeling yourself grow protective over it. You noticed Eren was taking glances at you from the driver's side. He smiled at the way kept touching his gift, reminding yourself over and over again of his love for you. "I'm glad you like my gift," Eren said.

"I wasn't expecting this, I appreciate it so much," you hummed and tickled his palm with the hand you held in your lap. "I should have gotten you a gift too."

Eren smirked softly and shook his head, "Don't be ridiculous, you're the graduate."

"I don't think I would have been able to make it through without you," you admitted, looking out the window to watch the streetlights pass by. "You're always doing things for me, giving me gifts. I hope I'm enough for you."

The grip around your hand tightened at your words and you pivoted your head to look at Eren whose lips were tight around the corners. "You are enough...you're more than enough."

His words warmed your heart. You noticed that he was trying to be more complimentary towards you by expressing his feelings and his desires more often. It made you happy to see these positive changes in his life. It didn't help that his facial expressions always spoke louder than his words.

"Are you okay? I know it was a hard morning for you," you asked, treading the waters carefully.

Eren gave a dark chuckle and glanced over at you. "Was I that obvious?" You nodded. "It was hard. I almost couldn't stand it. It's...frustrating."

You couldn't help but laugh, lightening the heavy atmosphere in the air. "Let's go somewhere else tonight."

His head nearly snapped, looking back at you. "W-What?"

"Yes! Let's go somewhere fun. The beach. Let's go to the beach." You were getting excited, feeling your rare desire for reckless decisions. Eren just stared at you, flabbergasted. He was snapping his head back at forth from the road to your face, trying to see if you were serious. "Com'n, just take this next exit. We'll get there and back before it's too late." The sun was only just beginning to set, casting a radiant spectrum of pink, purple, and red across the summer sky.

"Are you sure? It's your graduation after all." You could tell that his arms were twitching to crank the wheel to make the approaching ramp that took you towards the coast and away from the fancy banquet that await you.

"Yes, I'm sure! It didn't feel the same without you anyways." You tugged on his arm, coaxing him along. "You looked miserable. Let's get out of here!"

Eren beamed at you so wide that you thought his eyes were fully closed. "I fucking love you." With a snap of his wrist, he cranked the truck down a sharp ramp to the right. Your torso flopped to the left, nearly landing on him from the force. You rolled the window down to feel the evening summer air that was still warm blow through your hair. As Eren raced towards the beach, your joined laughter replaced the roaring sound of his engine.

Taking a vehicle to the beach would usually be a difficult task due to the high volume of people that would comb the shore. Parking would be a near nightmare and the heavy foot traffic made it nearly impossible to drive down the main strip right in front of the boardwalk. You were thankful that since the day was nearly ending and most of the people you knew were downtown at the graduation banquet, the beach was relatively quiet almost as if the place had been cleared just for you two. Eren parked his truck so that the ocean was in full view. The rattling engine was replaced by crashing waves and the songs of seagulls.

You glanced over at Eren who was staring out into the ocean again. He seemed so excited to follow the impulse, to bring you to his favourite place. It seemed like he was always in deep thought and awe whenever his eyes would catch the twinkling twilight across the whole horizon. His hair was blown out of place from the rolled-down windows and you shifted across the truck bench to press your left thigh against his right. Your hand spread to run your hands through his dishevelled hair and you did your best to smoothen out the tangles.

Your touch seemed to snap him back into reality as he flinched causing you to pull your hand back. "Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to shock you," you whispered with a throaty utter.

Eren bore his eyes into yours as he gently took the hand you pulled away close to his lips. You loved the way his fingertips drew small circles in your palm, sending electric waves to every single one of your nerve endings. He barely made any contact with your skin but it woke your body's desire for more of him. He replaced his fingertips with his moistened lips, you felt your eyebrows soften and your jaw slack open with every kiss he slowly trailed up your arm. Never once did he tear his eyes away from you, drinking in the way the golden hour sunset cast you in a warm glow.

"Do you like it when I do that?" he asked so gently, you barely heard him over your heavy breathing. You nodded, touched by his simple question. He continued to ask the farther up your arm he went until he was breathing heavily on the sensitive skin under your ear. If you weren't so enamoured by him, his constant check-ins would drive you into impatience. Instead, you let the clock tick by as slowly as it wanted to.

Eren was always changing in ways that only felt like it was for the better. His actions matched his words, creating a beautiful transcription of what his heart secretly thought. As he dragged his hands across the exposed skin on your back, he whispered, "The night sky wishes it had constellations like yours." He kept his eyes around your eyes, watching your facial expressions and your reactions to him as he continued. "I can see how the ocean is inspired by the sparkle in your eyes." Though you could tell his words were sometimes clunky and awkward, your heart swelled with his new efforts for you. You found yourself mostly speechless, only to respond in dumb sighs and desperate whimpers.

You felt inspired by him and like you were safe to grow in a way that you wanted to try. You needed him closer, even in the small confines of his truck. You were used to waiting for Eren's tug on your hands to pull you in. You wondered if he was so concentrated on complimenting you, that he had forgotten. Your patience was waning thin and the only solution was to initiate the satisfaction of your own desires.

You had to hike the skirt of your dress higher up to your hips in order to give yourself enough room to straddle your knees on either side of his legs. You wondered if Eren could feel your heartbeat through your wrists as you planted your palms on his shoulders. "I'm...I'm gonna kiss you, okay?" you shyly asked, already grazing your cupid's bow against his.

Eren nodded so fervently that he nearly closed the gap. Regardless, he waited for you with parted lips and half-lidded eyes. You didn't know why you felt so nervous, why you hesitated. "Kiss me, love. I want you to kiss me." he sighed, his hot breath coating your lips

You finally closed your eyes and pressed your lips tenderly on his. It felt different than the others. Eren's kisses usually felt desperate or needy, filled with passion. The kiss you gave him felt longing and slow like you were begging for time to stop for just a moment. Eren draped his hands around your hips, digging into the plush curves to press your lower body down on his hips. He followed your gentle lead, allowing himself to simply receive your patient love.

When you pulled away and opened your eyes, the golden sunset was replaced by the pale glow of the moon. You couldn't help but run a thumb across his cheek, memorizing the wrinkles around his eyes that appeared as he smiled up at you. There was a quiet lull as the sounds of your kisses and breaths were replaced with the gentle waves just outside the truck. You laid your head on his shoulder as you faced the crook of his neck releasing a dreamy sigh,

"Do you want to dance on the beach?"

You lifted your head at Eren's question and slipped off Eren's lap so quickly that you bumped into the horn, giving you both a jump scare at the beep. Childish giggles for something that wasn't even that funny took over both your senses as you looked around for any witnesses.

When the giggles died down, Eren turned his key halfway to turn the accessories on his truck. He used a single finger to push the cassette tape that was in waiting. "Meet me out there, okay?" he said as he flicked the headlights on to light the empty beach.

You nodded excitedly as you walked towards the beach in your sandals. You were planning on changing them to a fancier heel at the graduation banquet but you didn't mind getting sand in this pair of shoes. Your feet sunk past the top of the sand that was still warm until you felt the cool, dampness of the unexposed sand. The spot you waited in was far enough from the headlights that you wouldn't be blinded but was close enough to see where you were walking.

You could hear Eren fast-forwarding the cassette tape he inserted. When he finally found the perfect spot in the tape, Eren cranked the volume loud enough for you to hear it. The bright headlights made it hard for you to see, but you reached out to the silhouette of Eren's body regardless. He quickly wrapped his arm around your waist to rest on your lower back while guiding your arm to rest on his bicep. He took the other in the palm of his hand and held it high enough for you to see.

You recognized the song immediately from the trumpet intro and the slow jazz swing. Your bodies barely moved, but the gentle beat of the drum set synchronized your hearts. 'Eren is so romantic,' you thought, and you weren't ashamed to think it.

"Stars shining bright above you, night breezes seem to whisper, 'I love you.' Birds singing in the sycamore tree, dream a little dream of me," sang the vocalist.

Seven Months Ago

Eren watched you delicately place your head on his chest, swaying to the gentle beat of the song. He didn't realize that such a small movement would cause the beating in his chest to act out so badly. The melody of the slow jazz ballad was catchy enough for him to hum along, hopefully, you wouldn't notice his anxious heart pounding.

'This is bad...I think I'm falling for her...'

"Stars fading but I linger on dear, still craving your kiss. I'm longing to linger till dawn dear, just saying this."

He couldn't help it much longer the warmth of your scalp compelled him to bring his lips to the top of your head. He had kissed you there other times before but they weren't as hesitant or careful. Eren knew that all it took was for you to tilt your head to look up at him. It would take that much for him to draw your precious breath from your tongue.

"But in your dreams wherever they be, you gotta make me a promise, promise to me you'll dream a little dream of me."

It had been a lifetime of dreaming, of wandering lost in the arms of others. He always knew that engrained on the back of his eyelids as he slept was the image of you. The smattering of applause brought him back from the golden haze you tilted your head to meet his eyes. 'This is it...'

"Do you feel thoroughly thanked?" Eren asked.

'I'll kiss her right now...tell her I love her.'

"Not yet," you said.

'No, that's too much pressure...it'll ruin everything.' Eren's body moved towards you before he could even speak. "What can I do to properly thank you?" Eren whispered. You seemed to glow despite the uncertainty in your eyes. Your eyes showed you were scared, retreating away before he could reach you again. He watched as you closed your eyes, trying to calm your breathing.

Your lips puckered, tricking Eren into thinking that it was for him. Instead, you said, "We should probably head home, it's getting late."

Before he knew it, you were slipping away and walking to the door. You were like water in his hands that never seemed to rest. 'She might not like me in that way...'

The melody of the song stuck with him as he stood stiff on the dance floor. He waited for the current song the band was playing to finish before going up to the singer to ask, "What was that last song you guys played?"

The singer smiled down at him, clearly amused by the pink flush on his cheeks and the sparks that never faded from his eyes. "It's called Dream a Little Dream of Me by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. It's a special song."

Eren nodded, jotting down a mental note in his mind to search for a cassette tape. It was going to take some time to open up again. He knew that there would be another day when he would get another chance. Maybe there would be a day when falling in love with you didn't break his heart. That was when he would dance with you again. He didn't mind waiting.

Present Day

"Do you feel properly thanked, now?" Eren asked as the song ended. The cassette tape rolled over to the next track on the album and the slow sway between the two of you rested in the entropy of your shared embrace.

You laughed with a nod in response to his question. You remembered the flustered thoughts that plagued your mind as you danced with Eren for the first time. It felt like so long ago and like you were a completely different person. For once you didn't miss the old you and took pride in the person you had become.

Tilting your head up to meet his hazy gaze, you opened your lips to speak. Before you had the chance, Eren reached down and kissed you in a way that shattered your soul. In his arms, with the sand in your shoes, there was nothing else that you needed.

Eren spoke again, nearly too breathless to string together a concrete sentence. "I'm glad that I'm the only one who ever gets to see you dance so beautifully...so slowly...with me." He had a shaky tone to his words that scared you. "I'll always fall in love with you, no matter how much it breaks my heart."

You finally understood why the moments that made you feel closest to Eren brought swelling in your chest and why you held onto him so desperately. The more you loved him, the more the ending was going to hurt. Despite the impending doom and uncertainty that awaited you in just two months, you felt selfish enough to drag Eren along with you, to keep making new memories with him.

You tried to smile as you uttered, "I wouldn't want anyone else to break my heart but you, Eren Jaeger."
