Moon hidden behind clouds,

Cannot see the evil man does.

Only the light from sparse poles,

Illumes my errant path home.

Wear the darkness like a shroud,

Feel naked when light illuminates,

For all can witness my presence.

Nervously walk, like a hunted mouse.

Occasional glance rear wards flitted,

Ears alert for any foot falls.

All that can be heared is my own,

Echoing between the empty lifeless buildings.

Moon peeks out to see if all is still well,

Shrinks back in shame for depraved man.

Nerves raw and on edge,

My macho suave left behind long ago.

Feel the winds breath upon my neck,

Like icy fingers caressing intimately.

Way to familiar for my liking!

Shadows jump and play on peripheral vision,

Dancing sadisctic macabre rituals,

Sending beating drums of frenzy,

Upon my foolish scared heart.

Straining eyes observe what is not there,

Sinister monsters of black creeping shadows,

Concealing torments and vicious beasts of men.

Do I see what is there or what I think is there?

Ice slips down my spine like a lovers torment.

Skeletal claws rend my control from my mind,

As reverberating footfalls join mine,

Out of sync, eerily nerve shattering.

Mind in over drive postulating paranoia,

Goad me to walk on faster,

Test my pursuer.

My breaths accelerate too match my body,

My fears realised,  he too moves faster!

My ears attune to my fears ,

Hears his breaths with mine,

Eyes bulging,  as I rapidly glance behind,

To penatrate the murky depths,

Make sense of the encompassing darkness.

A shape!

Of all nights, why tonight?

Start to run,

Need to get away!

To leave this menace behind!

I need to reach the sanctity of my home,

There I will be safe!

Oh no!

He is running too,

Faster I run,

To escape my pursuant!

Yet tread for tread, he matches me!

Gasps of breath echo in my ears,

Reciprocal gasps accompany me!

The gap neither widens nor increases,

So my eyes do perceive.

This black shadow upon my heels,

Yields not in his quest to apprehend.

I reach my home, my place of safety.

Know the code off by heart,

Punch it in without a moments thought.

Inside, thoughts rushing through my mind.

When I stopped, so did he!

No more echoing footfalls?

I peep through the hole,

Nothing outside, nothing following me.

I sigh, as my racing heart subsides,

My aching legs tremble,

As I lean my head against the door.

...

I freeze...

The hair on my neck, stands on end like a porcupine!

My heart stops and stutters,

As fear grips me anew.

At my back...breathing...

There is someone, unseen!

Who slipped from the dark,

To slide his sharpness from ear to ear.

Feel the cutting, severing of flesh!

My gurgled scream,

Only I do hear.

Flailing arms help me not,

As panic sets in with earnest.

Ironic...he was here all along.

I collapse upon the hardened floor,

As my life blood seeps upon its cold surface.

I stare up at his leering face

And watch helplessly as he slips out the door.

I swim a while longer in my own pool,

As outside a jogger runs on by.

I try to laugh,

...but I cannot.

All to soon my limbs stop writhing in a sea of blood,

My white face drained,

A new red smile gapes up seeking breath.

My last thought is not of repentence,

It is of how I ran to my death,

Fearing a late night jogger.

Inside somewhere I hear cackling laughter,

Slowly subsiding as I force my eyes closed.

With utterly no love at all,

I embrace the cold darkness

And enter the realm of nothingness.
