I have stood at Death's doorstep,
And knocked upon his door.
To my surprise and horror,
He opened from within.
He greeted with a pearly white smile,
And profered me his hand.
I took his hand in mine,
And stared into his depthless eyes.
Afore I knew, I was inside,
And he suggested we drink some tea.
He showed me to a divan,
And sat down next to me.
Like old chums, we conversed some,
And laughed to my surprise.
Time stood still for a while,
And somber he did become.
Regretfully, he did inform,
It was not yet my time.
He helped me up, from my seat,
And showed me to the door.
I thanked him for the drink,
And made my way outside.
I turned around, to say goodbye,
But his house, was there no more.
Home I did return,
To a broken shell that healed.
Never to forget the day,
Death had me in for tea.
