FEBRUARY
Atlanta 📍

I didn't know what was happening. I didn't know who was hurt. And I didn't even know how I was reacting.

All I could think about was my father. This seemed to be a repeat of the trauma that still kept me up at night. I tried my best to hurry to the hospital like my mother had told me to.

But I was scared. I was scared of going there and seeing another one of my family members dead. I wouldn't be able to handle it. I wouldn't be able to handle seeing someone else I loved die in front of me.

It was hard to pay attention to the road. But what I did notice was the amount of red lights stopping me from being where I needed to be.

I hit every single red light.

That made me even more worried. Was I gonna be too late?

I just wished my mama would have told me what was going on. I hated surprises, simply because they tended to revolve around a death.

When I got to the hospital, I ran up to the emergency room. My mama, Rashawn , and Javier sat next to each other, somberly, in the blue waiting room chairs.

This could only mean that something happened to Mani.

"Mama? Ma? W-What happened?" I stood in front of her.

"Savior, Mani got shot three times. He said he was at Javier's house but Javier wasn't with him and- and," She stopped to wipe her tears. "He in surgery right now."

My heart dropped. I froze in my spot and my lungs heated in fire. I felt sick. I just had to get out of here. I had to get out. I had to get out.

My feet took me down the hall without me telling them to. My stomach emptied it self in the dull bathroom. As I felt myself kneeled over on the tiled floor, I couldn't help but be grateful for the coldness of the floor against my hot skin.

"I can't do this."

'Catch your breath, Junior. You have to catch your breath, baby. '

I was trying. I was trying to breathe, but it was hard. It was hard when every breath was painful.

"Savior! Savior! Come sit down."

I was back in the waiting room.

"You alright, bro?"

I needed to focus on breathing.

"Shawn, can you go get a nurse please? He having a panic attack and I don't-"

Maybe I needed to try doing this a different way. Maybe I needed to go outside. I think I just needed to leave.

"Honey, can you take a deep breathe for me," there was a white lady in my face. "Okay, now out. Good-"

My arm was grabbed and I was led into a small room. A elastic strap went over my head and I started to breathe better. I should've been able to do this by myself.

Some moments later, my eyes felt heavy. So heavy that I had to close them.

'Happy father's day, Sav.'

What was Mani even talking about? We had a father.

'I'm not pops, Mani. Im not a replacement for him either.''

He looked offended. Mani put his blue card back on the table.

'I know, but one of my teachers said to appreciate anyone in your life that's a father figure and you know- you like-' He stumbled over his words.

I looked down at the floor. I should've just accepted his appreciation. There was no reason for me to be so bitter. I was actually like a father to him.

'You know what? Thanks, lil bro.' I grabbed the card off the table.

Mani smiled big.

My body was being shaken awake.

"Savior?"

Majia was here. She was standing beside me in a white tank top and black sweats.

"Gee? What you doing here?" I pulled the breathing thingy over my head and placed it on the table. There was some water and mints already there, so I took a sip and popped a mint into my mouth.

"Rashawn called me. How you feeling?"

"Better than when I first got here."

"They told me to tell you that Mani will be out of surgery around 9:30."

"Ion wanna think about that." I couldn't bear it.

The thought of my little brother lying dead in a hospital bed was enough to make me sick again.

She seemed like she was taking a minute to collect her thoughts. I felt bad that she had come all the way here in her pajamas just to check on me. I wasn't my usual self right now.

But Gee looked so good. Her hair was thrown up in a bun and it showed off all of the piercing that occupied her ears.

"Sit on my lap," I was being the impulsive one this time.

"Sav- are you sure? Your mama already doesn't like me and if a nurse walks in and she finds out then-"

"Come."

Jia came over and did what I had told her to do. I had a feeling before that if my mom ever met Jia should would be skeptical of her. It was obvious that she didn't like her after hearing this whole story.

"Lemme fix your hair."

I hadn't even realized that my hair had fallen out on my ponytail and over my eyes. I watched her as she lifted up her arms and fixed it for me.

Gee was helping her me keep my mind off of why we were here and why we were in this room in the first place. If we could keep this up, I could get through tonight.

Her arms fell around my neck and mine around her waist. I knew we were thinking the same thing.

She leaned it first, grabbing my chin. Her plump lips met mine perfectly. I kissed her softly, but my kisses held appreciation. I started to feel Jia's heart beat from on top of me, but when I grabbed her ass, she pulled back.

"Savior, I'm sorry. I feel like I'm taking advantage of you," she got up. "Fuck, I'm sorry. I- we shouldn't have done that. I need to learn boundaries."

I grabbed her hands, "Nah, I want you to distract me, Jia. You not gon help me be distracted, baby?" I whispered.

"Fuck, this is so tempting, but no. We supposed to talk about emotions or sum. That's why they called me in here."

I almost laughed, "They called you here to talk about emotions?"

"Yeah, Savior." She rolled her eyes playfully. "I can talk about emotions, thank you very much."

"Mhmmm. What was you doing 'fore you got here? This isn't bothering you, right?"

She adjusted my hair, "Nun, I was just cleaning up my place. This isn't bothering me at all."

"Oh, okay. You a real ass friend for coming here, though."

"I know right." For some reason I liked how conceded she was. "Come on, get up. Let's go back to the waiting room."

I really didn't want to. "Nah, I'm good"

"Come onnnn,"she attempted to pull me up and when I finally stood up, I pretty much towered over her average frame.

She led me back out into the room that held sad family members and hopeless friends. I really didn't wanna be here.

"Hey, Junior? You feeling better?" Ma asked me as I sat beside her.

"Yup."

Majia sat down to my left and checked her phone. Knowing that my mama didn't like her was probably what was making her uncomfortable. I made a note to myself to ask her what had happened.

Everything and everyone seemed off. Jia didn't wanna fuck, Rashawn was staring at the wall, Mama was displaying some mixed emotions, and Javier hadn't said a word to me since I saw him.

"Are you the (——) family?" A doctor in purple scrubs and a white coat asked us.

(A/N: i forgot his last name)

"Yes." Shawn answered.

"Armani should be out of surgery within the next 10 minutes. And then, you guys will have to wait at least thirty minutes before visiting. Some good news is that his surgery went well, but some bad news is that we won't know how well it worked until he wakes up. There's a good chance he could be partial paralyzed."

No one said anything.

My breath began to hitch. This was my fault. I should've kept a better eye on him.

A hand caressed my back, "Thanks." Majia told the doctor before she left.

Something about Majia's statement angered my mama. She turned to look over me and at my friend.

"You have some nerve coming up in here and acting like you apart of our family. You have no business being here. I can take care of my son perfectly fine."

"What? It's not like I just randomly strolled in here and searched for yall. Shawn asked me to come. If U knew you were gonna be so rude to me I wouldn't have come. You started giving me dirty looks from when I stepped in the damn building."

"Hmph, Because this all happened because of you. You messing with my sons caused this stupid shit."

"Ma, come on now," I began.

"No, don't try to defend her. You are not in our family, lil girl. Just because Savior thinks you look cute doesn't mean you can sit here and wait with us like you ain't had something to do with it. If my son ends up dead in there, it's because of you."

"Trust me, I know I'm not apart of you family. I got my own family, miss. And you need to know that I may be young, but I'm not the one, okay? You not gon talk to me like I'm some damn intruder. You better be lucky that you are my friend's mother because I have done nothing but be respectful to you."Jia started to make sure she had all her stuff.

I didn't wanna deal with this.

"Yeah, you can go. You know what? You just like your parents. Kniving."

How did she even know them?

"My parents? Girl, I don't even know you like that nor do I know your relationship with my parents. I already planned on leaving, anyways."

"Hmm, and you look just like your father. My name is Ashley, hun. Why don't you go home and ask him what they and my ex did to my husband."

"It don't got shit to do with me whatever it is. Have a good day, Ashley." She turned and looked at me. "See you, Savior. Let me know me how Mani is."

"Wait, you don't gotta-"

"I do. I'll see you."

This was too much on top of all the things that's ere already happening. My mama fumed beside me and my brother just sat there in confusion.

"Ma, you had no reason to be that rude to her. She was just here to help."

"Sav, I see the damn lipgloss on your lips. I'm not stupid. And I knew from the second I saw her that she was Mar's kid."

"What you got going on with her father?" I was curious.

"We used to be friends but him and her mama betrayed me when I got with your father. That's why I'm telling you now to leave that girl alone."

"Whatever, you just put me in an even worse mood, man,."
