The next one to be tested is Pascal. He eagerly jumps up and down, excited to prove his innocence.
"Okay Pascal, show me the colors of the Corona flag," Rapunzel says.
Immediately, Pascal turns completely purple with a perfect, yellow Coronan sun on his chest.
"Good," Rapunzel says. "Now how about the color of a bimberry?"
Pascal changes to a deep maroon, a smile upon his face.
"Ooh!" Eugene remarks. "Now do the color that Lance turned when he got poisoned by that spider bite."
Pascal turns a sickly, pale green with brown splotches all over. His eyes look bloodshot, and he imitates the gravely ill facial expression Lance had at the time.
"You know, I'm not even the real Lance, but that's messed up," Imposter Lance says to Imposter Shorty.
"Alright, rapid fire!" Rapunzel says to Pascal. "Old Lady Crowley." The chameleon quickly changes into colors that resemble the old woman. "Ulf!" He imitates the mime. "Ulf's favorite color!" He turns invisible. "My favorite color!" He changes into countless different colors, one right after the other. "That's right, because all of them are equally amazing in their own way! He's the real Pascal."
Pascal falls over, exhausted but happy to have proven he is not an imposter.
Next is Eugene. Rapunzel circles him before saying, "Okay, Eugene, just a couple of questions."
"Fire away, Blondie," he replies, looking confident.
"First, what is Maximus's favorite food?" Rapunzel asks.
"Apples!" Eugene says.
"That's too easy," Varian mutters.
"What is Pete the Guard's middle name?" Rapunzel continues.
"The! Also Stan's middle name."
"Correct. Now, which of these posters is an accurate representation of the real Eugene Fitzherbert, aka Flynn Rider?" She holds up two of his old wanted posters.
"Ooh..." Eugene says, studying the posters. "Trick question! No artist can accurately capture all of this." He points at himself with a smug smile.
"That's Eugene!" Rapunzel says happily. "Varian, you're up!"
Varian stands in front of them nervously. He knows he isn't an imposter, but he hopes that the others believe him. He has no idea how the princess is going to test him, but he is trying to mentally prepare for anything.
"I only have one request for you," Rapunzel tells him. "It's something that I know no one else here could do."
"I'm ready as I'll ever be," Varian says with a nervous chuckle.
"As quickly as you can, tell me the first one hundred decimal places of pi. Go!"
Varian smirks. He takes in a deep breath, and without missing a beat he recites:
"Three-point-one four one five nine two six five three five eight nine seven nine three two three eight four six two six four three three eight three two seven nine five zero two eight eight four one nine seven one six nine three nine nine three seven five one zero five eight two zero nine seven four nine four four five nine two three zero seven eight one six four zero six two eight six two zero eight nine nine eight six two eight zero three four eight two five three four two one one seven zero six seven nine!"
"Correct!" Rapunzel says.
"Easy as pie," Varian jokes.
"My head hurts..." Cassandra groans.
"Hold on a second," Eugene says. "How do we know all of that was correct? He could've just been spitting out random numbers!"
Rapunzel holds up a piece of paper. "I heard him reciting it in the caravan earlier. I was bored, so I decided to write the numbers down. But they didn't exactly fit in with the art in my journal, so I tore the page out. I've had it on me ever since we left the caravan."
Eugene stares at the paper, and then looks at Varian. "Seems legit," he says. "Welcome to the Non-Imposter club, Varian."
"Yes!" Varian says, relief flooding through him.
Now, all that's left is to test Cassandra. Rapunzel turns to her and says, "I was going to write in my journal to see if the noise bothered you, but I must have left it in the caravan. However, I did find this apple." She holds it up for them all to see. "So, Cass, chop this into eight perfect slices."
Cassandra does this all the time, so Varian knows that the real Cass would have this in the bag.
Cassandra takes the apple from Rapunzel. "Now?"
"Yes, right now," Rapunzel replies.
"Well, I'm... I-I could break something," Cassandra says.
"You got room," Rapunzel tells her.
Varian raises a suspicious eyebrow. This isn't looking good... He thinks.
"Did you see this rug? It'll make a mess," Cassandra continues.
"Cass!" Rapunzel insists.
"Alright, alright, alright..." Cassandra says. After a moment's hesitation, she throws the apple in the air and prepares to slice it with her sword. But instead of slicing the apple, she turns around and cuts through the rope binding Imposter Lance and Imposter Shorty. As they stand up, freed, she turns to face Rapunzel with a wicked grin. To everyone else's horror, her eyes are now glowing red.
"Yeah, I'm gonna go with not Cass," Eugene says.
"Definitely not Cass!" Varian shouts fearfully, as the three imposters step towards them menacingly. "I think now would be a good time to vacate the premises!"
Rapunzel, Eugene, and Varian dash down the hallway, as the imposters chase after them. They hide behind a mantle as the imposters rush past, then they quickly climb up the stairs and hide in an armoire. It's a tight squeeze, but Varian sighs with relief.
"That was close," Rapunzel says.
"I never want to see Cass like that again..." Varian says with a shudder. Those glowing red eyes of hers will no doubt haunt his nightmares for weeks.
"Are you guys okay?" Eugene asks. "Where's the chameleon?"
Rapunzel and Varian exchange worried glances, and even Pascal let's out a gasp. "Wait... Did you just call Pascal a chameleon?" Rapunzel asks.
Eugene holds up his hand in defense, but drops something in the process... Rapunzel's journal.
"So there's my journal!" Rapunzel exclaims. Realization dawns on her and Varian, and they both leap out of the armoire away from Eugene. "That's how you know my secrets!"
"No! I was just holding the journal," Eugene says, following after them. "You dropped it and, uh..."
"You really expect us to believe that?!" Varian says, hiding behind Rapunzel's hair.
"Do the smolder!" Rapunzel tells Eugene.
"Uh..." Eugene hesitates for a moment, and then gives her a goofy-looking grin, pointing finger guns at her.
"You're not Eugene!" Rapunzel gasps in horror.
'Eugene' sighs. "Okay, but you gotta admit, I had this Eugene guy down pretty well, right? I mean, I was way better than the other doubles... Shorty."
"But how?" Rapunzel asks as her and Varian begin to back away. "When?"
"Oh, Rapunzel..." Imposter Eugene says, leaning casually against the wall. "Eugene was the first of you to gaze into our mirror."
"Honestly, I'm not surprised," Varian says.
"But Shorty threw you," Rapunzel says.
"Well, I had to keep up appearances until we could get you into the mirror," Imposter Eugene explains.
"What have you done with my friends?" Rapunzel asks gravely, as the other doubles come around the corner. "What are you?"
Imposter Eugene growls, his eyes glowing red. He and the others begin stepping toward Rapunzel and Varian, who have no choice but to back up towards the mirror.
"Don't run from us," Imposter Eugene says with a smile.
"It's so much better this way," Imposter Cassandra adds.
"No annoying qualities," Imposter Lance says.
"No bickering," Imposter Shorty says.
"We share the same mind. It's bliss," all of the doubles say in unison.
"Um, this is getting creepier by the second!" Varian says to Rapunzel. He realizes that they are almost completely backed up to the mirror now.
"Varian, Pascal, run!" Rapunzel shouts.
Varian's first instinct is to not leave the princess behind. But he knows that if they all get caught, no one will be left to rescue them. Without further hesitation, he and Pascal take off in a sprint while the doubles force Rapunzel to touch the mirror.
Varian stops to look back, and sees Rapunzel's reflection reaching out of the mirror with glowing red eyes and terrifying claws. It grabs onto her, attempting to pull her in.
"Rapunzel!" Varian shouts worriedly.
Rapunzel fights against her double, as they both leap away from the mirror. They grapple with each other, and in the fight Varian loses sight of which one is the real Rapunzel. Before long, one of the Rapunzels wins and forces the other one into the mirror. The one on the outside stands up straight, and turns around to face the other doubles with an evil grin.
"Oh no... they got her," Varian whispers to Pascal. It is now up to them to save their friends.
