Dave took the bag and set it on the counter, as it was a bit heavy.
"we are making this happen"
He took a spatula out of the bag and put it between his upper lip and nose like a mustache.
"jade jade who am i jade look"
Jade wagged her tail and giggled.
"you're in a good mood today, dave!!"
She pondered for a moment as she took out the flour.
"arrrreee youuuuu... jake?"
"yes"
Dave looked over to Ruby.
"i had a lot of fun today with our daughter is all"
Ruby wagged her tail, barking at Dave.
Jade reached in the bag and fished out the chocolate chips. She put them in the middle of the counter, away from Ruby, just as a precaution.
"that's fair. we'll make a few different batches of cookies, since i wanna give some to roxy and john too!"
Leaning down, she gave Ruby a few pats and grabbed a bowl from the cupboard. Dave opened a bottle of sprinkles from the bag and put some on Ruby's tray. He put a finger up to his mouth as if he were saying;
"dont tell mommy"
Ruby eyed the things that had been set out on the counter, and when Dave set the sprinkles on her tray, she wagged her tail and nodded in silent agreement with him. She then ate the sprinkles. Meanwhile, Jade, oblivious to Ruby's sprinkle slurping, tore open the bag of flour.
"ok... im not exactly sure how to do this so we'll just wing it!"
She dumped a whole bunch into the bowl, not paying any mind when it got all over her face and hands.
"oh my gog"
Dave smiled and laughed a little, the laughing was followed by coughing.
"whered ya go"
He was still laughing and coughing. The flour on his shades blinded him so he took them off.
"where is my wife"
Ruby yipped at her parents, unsure of where they had gone. She saw Dave's shades discarded on the counter and whined at them. Jade spit out some flour that got in her mouth, heard Ruby whining and tried to wipe some of the flour off her glasses so she could see. Through her smudged, white streaked spectacles, she saw Ruby reaching towards her parents. She picked up her daughter and ruffled her pale hair.
"maaaaybe that was a bad idea..."
Dave wondered how she didn't think that before while she looked around, opening a few cabinets with one arm. She had Ruby perfectly balanced with her other.
"do we have any measuring cups..."
She opened one more cupboard and realized her defeat.
"winging it it is! but maybe no more flour, i think we have enough."
She giggled as she looked at the overflowing bowl and her flour stained husband. Dave wiped off his shades and readjusted them back on his face.
"babe do you even know how to make cookies"
He smiled while grabbing Ruby from Jade's arm. He set her back in the high chair and wet a paper towel to clean off the counter. Ruby reached out and grabbed a glob of the soon sticky flour, attempting to put it in her mouth. Jade thought for a moment about Dave's question, then gave a big grin and a shrug.
"nope!!"
She tried to wipe some of the flour off the counter, but just got it all over her and Dave's feet. Paying no mind, she tried to clean her glasses on her shirt, but managed to smudge even more flour onto them. She struggled with that for a moment, not noticing Ruby beginning to gobble up the sticky flour. Dave balled up the paper towel and threw it to the trash can. Squeezing the paper towel had only resulted in extracting water from it, which then leaked to the floor.
"really didnt think that one through"
He turned to see Jade attempting to take the sticky flour from Ruby. His doggy wife was struggling and failing to get Ruby to spit out the flour.
"chill jade it's like uncooked bread there arent even eggs or milk in it"
He watched as the chaos continued.
"really jade its fine shes basically the most resilient dog-child ever"
Jade pried open Ruby's tiny toddler hands and attempted to take back the globby flour, but she was a determined little puppy. She finally managed to scrape most of the flour off of her daughter, even while Dave protested, and threw it away, but when she turned back Ruby was still munching on the sticky dough, defiantly staring right at her. She sighed and gave up, much to her husband's relief, and opened the fridge with her white coated hands. Dave grabbed the bottle of sprinkles and prepared to negotiate. He walked to Ruby's highchair and showed her the bottle.
"alright if you give me the flour you can have some sprinkles"
He sharpened his gaze at the toddler playfully.
"take your pick"
Ruby suddenly had a huge choice to make. Continue eating the wet flour or get the sprinkles instead. She gave up her flour and reached for Dave, craving sprinkles. Jade sighed in relief.
"good idea, dave!"
The nightmare was over. No more sticky flour to wrestle away from her child.
"k but no more after this"
He shook some of the sprinkles out onto the tray and confiscated the flour.
"you gotta go to bed after we finish making this mess"
He turned around and gave his wife a shit-eating grin.
"thx b"
He gave a thumbs up, sticky flour still in his hands. Ruby happily munched on the sprinkles, not regretting for even a single moment having hidden that last glob of sticky flour from Dave. Jade tried to clean the flour out of her perked, doggy ears, shaking her head and letting even more flour fall to the ground. She either didn't notice, or was very good at pretending not to notice that her floor was now absolutely covered in white powder. Snatching a few eggs from the fridge, she attempted to crack them over the bowl but only managed to get most of the slime running down her hands and a bunch of shells in the flour.
"dave you don't happen to know how to crack eggs do you?"
Dave shrugged. She huffed, letting out a little growl in the process.
"oh john and jane make it look so easy!!"
"gotchu hon"
He scooped as little flour out of the bowl as possible in order to get the shells out. He rolled up his now pink looking sleeves and cracked the eggs over the bowl.
"karkat taught me heh"
"karkat... i wonder how he's doing?"
She looked to Ruby who had started to yip, and gave her a buck-toothed smile.
"come on dear, let's get you down now."
She lifted her doggy kid out of the chair and set her down on the floor, just now realizing she had left two flour handprints on her child's sides.
"whoops."
Jade grabbed a paper towel and brushed her handprints away.
"maybe we should call it good for the night?? we've made quite a mess."
Dave looked at the messy floor.
"yeah we should find a recipe and try again tomorrow"
Jade laughed.
"yeah. let's ask john to help us!"
"alright"
Jade turned back to Ruby.
"let's get you to bed then shall we?"
Ruby yipped, not yet wanting to sleep. Jade washed her hands while Dave tried to salvage the untouched flour in the bowl.
"alright puppy, time for bed."
Jade scooped up Ruby, leaving Dave to clean the kitchen as she headed upstairs to put Ruby to bed.
