You and Cas had been on the road for nearly two days straight and you decided it was time for a rest. You were used to going without sleep or food, but Cas in his newly human form simply couldn’t hold up like you could. So you checked in to some crappy motel and left to bring him back some food. When you returned to the room he was fitfully sleeping on the bed. He was obviously having nightmares and kept tossing and turning in an attempt to get comfortable, and you noticed every time he turned on his back he scrunched up his face in pain.

“Cas,” you said as you sat down next to him and began gently shaking his shoulder. “Cas wake up.” When he still didn’t respond you roughly shoved his shoulders a few more times until he suddenly sat up and looked around the room with confusion and panic.

“Hey hey, Cas it’s alright. It was just a bad dream. You’re okay now. Well, aside from being stuck in a crappy hotel room, you’re fine.” He turned to look at you and pulled you into a tight hug.

“I don’t know how you humans deal with these dreams. They are so vivid and every part of it feels so real,” he said into your shoulder.

“We don’t deal with it very well Cas. Why do you think me and Dean never sleep?” You began to run your fingers through Cas’s hair in an attempt to calm him down. It seemed to be working and you were going to move your other hand to rub his back but as soon as your hand made contact with him, he winced.

“Cas what’s wrong with your back?”

“Just the aftermath of falling.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well when I lost my grace my wings barely remained. And as I fell back to Earth, whatever remained burned away.”

“Oh…..do you want me to look at it? Maybe I can help, somehow.”

He nodded at you and turned to sit cross-legged on the bed, his back facing you. When he pulled off his shirt you could see why he was in so much pain. All over his back you could see the blistered outlines of feathers scorched onto his skin. His shoulders were the worst, nearly every inch covered in the blisters. The patterns would have been gorgeous, had they not been causing the former angel so much pain.

“Oh Cas…..no wonder it hurts so much.”

“Can you fix it?”

“Well it’s mostly healed up already. All the burns have blistered up, meaning they've already started to heal on their own. There’s not too much I can do.” You got up and walked over to rummage through your duffle bag. You returned to the bed with a bottle of aspirins.

“Here, take these. They should make the pain go away for a few hours. I think your problem is that your muscles are just really sore.”

You gave Cas the pills and sat behind him.

“Okay Cas, this is gonna hurt but you’ll feel better after. I promise.” You then began to rub his back, trying to get all the soreness out of his muscles. At first he squirmed and kept saying how he didn’t think this was making things better at all. But after a few minutes his muscles began to relax. He quieted down and began leaning into your touch. After about half an hour you stopped, much to Cas’s disappointment.

“Why did you stop?” he asked, seeming almost offended.

“I’m sorry Cas but my hands were hurting,” you said laughing. “Did it help any?”

“A considerable amount actually. (y/n)….what do they look like?”

“What does what look like?”

“The burn marks.”

“Oh, well they look like wings,” you said as you began to trace the marks. “They’re a bunch of outlines of feathers. They look pretty cool actually. After those blisters heal up you’re gonna have some awesome scars. Way cooler than any of the lame ones me, Sam and Dean have.”

“But they won’t be any good for anything,” Cas said his tone suddenly turning bitter, “except a constant reminder of how I messed everything up. They’re going to be useless, just like me.”

“Cas don’t say that. You’re not useless. You already have fighting and tracking skills, you just have to get used to using them in a human way. You’ll learn quickly having the almighty Winchesters as teachers.”

“That still won’t take away my disfiguration. And I won’t be able to protect you anymore, not like how I used to. I’m not your angel anymore (y/n). I am just another person you have to worry about.” Cas’s voice was filled with sadness as he finished speaking and he bowed his head. You scooted up to be directly behind him and began placing light kisses on the burns of his shoulders.

“Cas, these aren’t disfigurations. Dean say’s they’re battle wounds. And that you only get them when you were really trying to stand up for what’s right. And I think they’re beautiful.” Cas turned around to face you and you saw that there was now a glint of hope in his eyes.

“You think they’re beautiful?”

“Yes.” Hearing your response Cas looked down at the bed with a shy smile.

“And Cas,” you said taking his hands in yours. “You’ll always be my angel, no matter what.” Cas smiled at you and placed a chaste kiss on your lips.

“And you’ll always be my favorite hunter.”
