Anywhere, USA: Common Settings

There are two types of settings in your romance:

🏙The urban setting

🏘The suburban setting

I've seen some rural settings pop in, but stay away from those as much as you can.

The urban setting is usually a Westernized city like New York City.

New York City is where I'm from, and so I'm partial to stories in this city, although it has fallen out of favor. It is much trendier to base your stories in other cities like Los Angeles or Chicago or even Mumbai.

Whichever city you write about, try not to be too descriptive when writing it. Make sure you're in parts of the city that have been described a million times in pop culture and give them a dope apartment in the city's epicenter even though your MC is a secretary for a nonprofit that can barely afford to pay her salary and parents who are struggling financially.

For stories in a suburban setting, the town truly does not matter. Your characters will spend most of their time in a car, at home, at the romantic lead's home, at school, at work or at a friend's house. Any other locations in the town, like restaurants or lakes or beaches, those could be in almost any town of the U.S. not specific to the town.
