Part 1: An unexpected guest
Tim, a teenager, lived with his mother and sister in the mountainous town of Vail, Colorado, in a house they had recently shifted to. It was the 19th of August, 2020, just another melancholic Sunday for Tim as he took a sigh of relief after finishing the last of his homework and came bolting down the stairway to find his annoying sister, Lara already seated at one of the four chairs of the dining table, having an apparently very serious discussion with her mother, Mrs. Nolan.
"....half my face got burned to hell and I wasn't down for a day, because I had my family with me. I'm not going to let you be sad over a bad grade," said Mrs. Nolan.
"You just want to find a way to insert your face burn, still happy story somewhere in a conversation, every freaking day," replied Lara jokingly.
It was but a coincidence that their conversation came to an end and the living room went dead silent as Tim approached them.
"You can talk about dad in my presence, I'm 14, I'm old enough to understand things for shit's sake," said Tim angrily, "Mom, why can you discuss that shit with her and not me when she's only a year older?"
"Mind your tongue," replied Lara, "and we weren't even talking about that, why does everyone in this house have to make everything about themselves?"
"Here we go again," said Mrs. Nolan, "Can't we just sit down and have this amazing lunch I made, like a normal, happy family?"
"Sorry," responded both Tim and Lara, simultaneously.
"Not really that happy though, are we?" mumbled Tim.
The other two chose to ignore his usually whiny behavior.
"Grandpa's coming to visit today, so help me tidy up at least the living room," said Mrs. Nolan.
"Sorry, I've got plans," said Tim, "I've got to hang out with Elian."
Lara stared at him with flinched eyes for a while.
"You spend so much time with him; sometimes I worry about your sexuality. You know, if you come out, we'll accept you for who you are," said Lara in a sarcastic tone.
"Ha ha, very funny, I'm gay, ha ha." replied Tim.
"Why? Is there something wrong with it? Look out! We got a homophobic in the house," said Lara.
"So I'm old enough for you to joke about homophobia with me but not talk about dad?"
Their argument was interrupted by the doorbell which Mrs. Nolan responded to. Confused, as well as surprised, she opened the door after looking through the peephole.
"Lee!?" she exclaimed.
After which there was a long pause as they stared at each other.
"Oh, screw this," said Tim as he got up from his chair, leaving his half-eaten steak right there on the table.
"Sit your ass down," said Lara.
"No. I can't deal with this right now. Oh, and mind your tongue." replied Tim, mimicking Lara on the last part while walking away towards the stairs.
