Chapter Seventeen

Start from the beginning

The day went by so increasingly slow for me that when lunch time came, I was phased out with being stuck in the office with files and files of accounting details for the project and of the firm. I quickly got out and went with Greg to Mason's office. We all got out of the building and went to get some food up in our mouths.

"What's wrong, love?"

I looked up from my fries to see that Mason and Greg were looking at me with faces of concern. I wondered what was wrong, but then I looked down and realized that I hadn't even eaten my fries yet. I shook my head

"Nothing, Mason."

He cocked his eyebrow

"You only call me by my name when you're troubled. Come on, what's up? Is it Mr Williams again?"

I quickly shook my head. He hadn't done anything to me ever since the house destruction issue. No letters either. Should I tell them about Max, and what he said? I didn't think that I could make a decision about this myself, so I told them about it.

When I finished telling them the story, Mason had a full on grin on his face while Greg wore a warm smile. Suddenly, Mason held onto my hand and squeezed it tightly while he was skittish in his chair.

"Oh, yes, Vee!!!!!! You have got to say yes! Why would you even think about saying no?? Have you SEEN him? He's beautiful, not handsome, beautiful!!!!!"

Greg and I just laughed at his antics. I couldn't help but agree with him.

He is beautiful.

"I don't know, Mace. I just don't think I'm cut out to be his girlfriend. Haven't you seen the girls he's been with to those functions?"

Mason sat back down, the enthusiasm drained out of him.

"Valerie, how can you think so little of yourself? You are beautiful! If I wasn't gay, you'd be my girlfriend."

I laughed and wiped off a baby tear. Greg also decided to talk at that time.

"I have seen the girls too, Valerie, but he's never been with them, on a girlfriend and boyfriend basis. If they did develop into something else, it was never official. If he's asked you to be his girlfriend, it should be because he does like you, honestly. He's never given a second glance at a girl before, not in the way that he does with you."

I took my smoothie and slurped in the juice into my mouth.

Strawberry, my favourite flavor.

What Greg said was what I was worried about. He could have any girl at his disposal, and I'm not all that pretty. I did like him, in a way that I never thought possible, but I didn't think I could give myself up if it meant that I could get hurt in the end.

"Give him a chance, Vee."

I looked at Mason, and he was already halfway done with my fries.

"Hey!!" I hit him on the head and he winced, holding onto his head.

"Why are you eating my fries?"

"I thought you were still mopping uselessly on that story and figured that you wouldn't eat them. I can't let a good meal go to waste."

I sighed and let him have the remaining ones. He was right, I wouldn't have eaten them.

When I got home, I got in to hear a loud burst of laughter. I followed the laughs to the living room to see Claire watching TV. There appeared to be a rom-com playing on the screen. I couldn't find the name of the movie in the dusty parts of my head, so I just let it pass.
