31 ➵ Truth Be Told

Luckily, there were too many guests occupying Greg that he didn't notice our disappearance.

"What do you want, Daniel?" I spat, as we finally stepped outside.

He sighed, obviously a bit hurt by my aggression. "I just wanted to clear a few things, okay?"

"What even happened between us, Daniel? Everything was going so well, and then you just dropped everything and left?" I continued with the questions.

"Look, I care about you, Marie. I really do," he thought out his words carefully.

I gave out a dry chuckle. "Care about me enough to ghost me?"

Daniel looked serious, "Marie."

Though, I shook my head at the boy. "Daniel, don't lie to me. At one point or another, you weren't pretending anymore, right? This 'fake relationship' wasn't faked, at least at one point," I raised an eyebrow.

He stayed quiet.

"Well?" I grew desperate.

The boy brushed his arms through his hair, frustration on his face. "The week before your sister came into town. When you opened up to me about your mother and everything, that's when I felt something."

"Then, what changed that?"

"She did."

I didn't know what it felt like to have your heart physically dropped, but that's the only way I could describe that moment. "Who?" I was afraid that my voice would falter, saying the littlest I could in the moment.

He looked at me, a sincere expression on his face. "Sienna changed that. Sienna changed everything."

"How?"

A bitter laugh came off his lips, a disgustingly warm smile on his face, tears almost swelling in his eyes. "She came back to me, Marie. I'm so sorry, but she came back."

There is so much history in the way he talked about her, in the way he says her name. I believe that when they are together, there is a current that runs between them; almost like an electric charge on the verge of erupting into a blissful storm. They're rebuilding what they have lost. I couldn't even compare.

It was in the way he says the word, she – that tells me everything I needed to know and more.

"You love her?"

"I love her, Marie. I can't be sorry that I love her, I just do."

Daniel didn't hold one ounce of regret in his sentence. It was bitter to know that the one you love longs for another, but it heals my heart a bit knowing he's in the arms of someone that loves him just as much, maybe more if possible, than I. The depths of my care for the boy will always be my truest treasure.

At least I know I'm capable of falling in love, right?

The most beautiful love aside from true love is unrequited love, really. I just didn't know that at the time.

Still, I knew at that moment I was going to miss Daniel, an almost to me. I'll feel sad because there is no name for the specific feeling. It is the type of emotion you feel in a way that makes you tired to your very bones. Daniel will always be my almost lover.

I changed subjects, not wanting him to see my sorrow. "Does Greg know?"

He shook his head, nerves shivering down his spine. I laughed, actually laughed. Daniel was nervous, very nervous, and it was amusing. That's when I knew not all requited love had to be sad, because as long as they're happy, I'll be happy too. It's your happiness over mine, I thought.

"Let's go tell him then," I pulled my arm out for him to grab.

Daniel did.

Maybe that's all we'll ever be – an incomplete sentence, a half-written story. Finished, without a proper ending.

hi everybody! literal favorite chapter to write because i was so excited to be able to write it in marie's point of view! i absolutely loved how this chapter ended and i absolutely love where this ending of the book is going! i finished this chapter & my other chapter in one day (wow)!

i've been on a bit of a writing splurge especially because i haven't been very active. i'm starting a new job soon so my time is quite difficult to manage with writing, but i'll try to update very soon!
