TWENTY THREE: snow

Start from the beginning

I didn't hesitate to listen to him and bounced out of my seat. He covered his hand in mine and lead me outside. The harsh wind greeted us as the snow danced easily across the sky. My feet dragged as he hauled me toward his car, and I was regretting the heels I wore.

Once we settled in, Logan rushed to blast the heat and flick on the windshield wipers. The only sound igniting my ears was the wipers whipping back and forth.

"Are you warm enough?" Logan's deep voice grumbled as he began to take off his coat without waiting for my response. He threw the thick material over my legs and it radiated off enough heat to keep my shivering down.

"Thank you, I didn't realize it was supposed to snow." I chewed heavily at my lip, thinking about how I was going to get to work tomorrow.

"Me either... Fucking Michigan weather." Logan mumbled and slowly drove through the snow.

I muffled a laugh at his comment. I peered out the windows and noticed how thick and fast the snow was falling. "I can't believe how heavy it's coming down, are we going to make it home?"

"We'd make it to my house, your apartment is more out of the way. Is that okay, or do you want me to try to get you home?"

"No, let's just get somewhere safe. It's okay, let me text Madison to feed Clementine." I hastily reached into my pocket and shot Mads a quick text.

Logan drove cautiously and slowly back to his house. I was surprised at how well his Porsche was doing in the snow.

I heard my phone ping and looked over at the text Madison sent me.

Madison: I'll head over right now. Be safe, text me when you're at his house. xoxo

I peeked up at the window and could barely make out our view as we turned into Logan's driveway. He had this long driveway with a gated entrance that screamed castle to me.

My heart sank once I heard the tire spinning in a halted stop. He revived it a few times, but the car was cemented.

"Fuck-" Logan cursed, and shut the engine off. He turned over to me, "We're going to have to walk to the door."

I glanced down at my shoes and couldn't help but say a silent prayer. There's no way I was going to haul half a mile in the snow in these heels. I reached down to slide them off and nodded to Logan.

"Okay, you lead the way." I held his coat to him, as a gesture for him to take it.

"You're not walking up there barefoot."

"I slip and die if I try to walk in these heels, I'll be better barefoot. I'll be fine, trust me." I reassured him, and I pressed his coat closer to him.

Logan didn't respond as he left the car. I held tightly onto his coat as I prepared myself to open the door. I unbuckled my seatbelt and reached for the door handle. I gasped as I heard Logan open my passenger door.

The snow was falling heavily everywhere and danced on his hair. He looked angelic, a white covered savior. Logan grasped his coat out of my finger and threw it over my bare legs once more. With one swift action, Logan grasped under me to hold me bridal style. He started the long haul toward his house.

"Wait Logan, it's okay I can walk. The snow is too hard to walk through and I'm heavy-"

"You're not going to catch a cold or pneumonia because you walked barefoot through the snow. I got you, you weigh nothing." Was all he said as he strived through the heavy snow as easily carried me. I decided not to argue with him, I didn't need frostbite gnawing at my feet all week.

I couldn't help but think how peaceful this was. He held me so close with the snowflakes quietly falling all around us, it felt like a daydream I needed to wake up from.

The snowflakes kissed my skin, sending cold down my spine. I held my shaky breath in as Logan arrived at his front door.

"Hold around my neck," Logan asked me. I swiftly latched on to his neck to stay steady. Logan gently released one hand around me to type in his key entry and stepped us into his foyer. I welcomed the warm air, and could finally let out the deep breath I was holding in.

Logan carefully placed me down, his suit jacket slid to the floor. The snow melted on my hair which caused my teeth to clatter. I took in Logan's appearance, the pants around his ankles had been covered with snow that was quickly melting.

"C'mon, let's get dry." Logan simply told me and grasped my hand once more.

I trailed behind him, the sound of his squeaky shoes was the only thing that filled my ears. Once we reached his bedroom, Logan dug through his closet while I stood awkwardly in the center of the room. Despite the inclement weather conditions outside and my teeth clattering from the cold air, my cheeks surged with fluster and warmth.

Logan walked over to me with thick clothes to hand me. "I'm not sure how well they'll fit, but you can't stay in these wet clothes." Logan's fingertips brushed softly against my fingers.

I simply nodded in response, "okay. I'll be right back." I walked back over to the bathroom to get some privacy and forgot how nice Logan's bathroom was.

Holy mansion. The floors were heated and I fought the urge to suddenly lay down on them. I stripped off my damp dress and threw the thick hoodie over my head. Almost immediately the warmth surged through me. The hoodie hung very loosely over my body, it just brushed my knees, but I wasn't complaining. I threw the sweatpants on and could feel my leg slowly defrosting. I rolled the waist up a few times to ensure they weren't going to slip off me.

I emerged from the bathroom and saw Logan had started a blazing fire in the fireplace. I firmly held onto the sweatpants as I took in Logan's appearance. He had stripped off his t-shirt and displayed his bare sculpted chest. He had red flannel pajamas that hung low on his waist. I couldn't help but gawk at him like a fish.

"Are you warm enough?"

I quickly nodded my head in response, "Yes I am now. Thank you, sorry about my shoes and stuff."

"Don't mention it, why don't you stand by the fire and I'll get you some hot tea?" Logan motioned over to the fire, and I obliged his commands.

"What about coffee?"

Logan tilted his head in curiosity, "This late?"

"I think I'm at the point with caffeine that it doesn't even affect me anymore." I shrugged and held my hands to the crackling fire.

"Okay, I'll be right back," Logan called out as he swiftly exited the room.

My eyes trailed over to the fire, studying the way the fire flickered back and forth. My thoughts took over me, as I thought more about the creature in the woods.

I wish I could stop obsessing over it, but curiosity killed the cat. And it might as well kill me now. My skin burned warmly at the proximity of the fire or the thoughts that were overcoming me.

The dark, sinister feeling, that what I was thinking was true... everything I've ever known was a lie.
