Chapter Thirty Three

In this world, there are many different stages people go through. Above all, there are different states of people: people who are dead, and people who are alive.

Once people die, they're gone forever.

Aren't they?

Because there's actually not just two states that we, as humans, go through. In fact, there's a third: the people who come back from the dead. It may sound impossible — but it can happen: with the help of something mysterious and magical, a book with extraordinary power we never knew something could ever possess.

It's called The Necronomicon. This loosely translates to the book of the dead. It's been alive for centuries, and no-one has ever been able to destroy it.

The story goes that it was created by The Old Ones — creatures who are as old as The Necronomicon is. Once they ruled the Earth, and used their magic to control our world. These monsters are gone now — they cast themselves to another universe, having seemingly destroyed our planet. Yet our planet survived, and even thrived: and they went on. Nobody knows when and if they will ever return: but if they ever do, chaos will reign and death shall take many souls for its own, and our Earth may finally fall into ruin.

There are different sections of The Necronomicon, of course. There is the section where you can bring people back to life, and cheat death, the section where one can become immortal, and of course the deadliest sections of them all: including the section in which pure evil can be released into the world — in the form of the Kandarian demon. This demon can inhibit both inanimate objects and animate objects and take possession of them and their bodies (if the thing they bewitch have one). A human controlled by the Kandarian becomes a 'Wanderer'. This demon can also move things around, in a similar method to the way a poltergeist can.

Of course, there are many other spells within its pages: the summoning of other demons, potions to make someone sleep for centuries, to stir someone from the deadliest poison, even to reverse a gunshot... The Necronomicon can even create a rift in time and space.

The book also has its own abilities: essentially, it is alive. It can speak, if a drop of blood stains its cover. It can also absorb someone into its pages: essentially killing them: though they do not die. They are just doomed to never be seen again.

The Necronomicon (other names include Naturom Demento, The Book of The Dead, Le Livre de la Mort, and Cartea morții, among others) and it is the border between life and death. It is the most powerful object in the world.

There is one passage that is well known and associated with The Naturom Demento, one of the only translated passages. It goes like this:

That is not dead which can eternal lie,

And with strange aeons even death may die.

The Necronomicon is bound in aged human skin: but never decayed, due to The Old Ones' magic. As well as this, it looks to be a normal book from the outside, not at all like its binding once belonged to a human. The ink it is written in is the ink from within our veins: human blood.

Where does The Naturom Demento live now? The Old Ones used it to leave this Earth: yet they did not take it with them when they left our planet behind. Its first documented position was 42.4347° N, 83.9850° W, and its last documented position was: 38.8977° N, 77.0365° W — however it is believed to not exist there anymore.

The Necronomicon is written in two main languages: Arabic, and what could be referred to as Pig Latin, though it does contain traces of other tongues as well. To use it, it must be said with complete precision: or translated to another language. If the translation is perfect, then the spell will still work.

The Book of the Dead has had many people attempt to produce copies of it: yet these are all hoaxes. There is only one true Necronomicon: characterised by its features: a small slit on the cover, just above the title: an ink stain on the fifty fifth page, made when one of The Old Ones had a thirst for the blood and couldn't resist the pages of The Naturom Demento. There's the feel of the binding: the stitching made from human hair, even the tint of the writing — the reddish brown of dried blood. Even the pages smell: almost a mixture of cigarette smoke and the aroma of rusting iron, and fresh blood being spilled across the ground; The Old Ones combined their favourite scents into The Book of the Dead.

The Necronomicon holds frightening secrets: it can even drive a person to madness. To use it, you must have true peace of mind — or the power to resist. It seems The Old Ones have never realised they left their creation behind: or they meant to. For whatever reason it was left behind from their universe-hopping, The Old Ones may one day come to collect it.

We must be prepared for this outcome. For on that day, humanity may be lost altogether.
