Chapter 61: Unconscious

Start from the beginning

From our connections to the army, international lawyers and other diplomats... they all made sure that the justice for Millen was absolute.

At a situation like this, I cannot help but feel relieved that I am someone born in the Zevallos clan.

Our family's reputation and endless connections allowed me to have these sources to rely from.

After all, their connections with us is based on true friendship.

True friendship is not based on the foundation of greed and schmoozing... rather, it is based on shared principles and genuine companionship.

With that, it is true friendships that can never be brought in this world.

During this time, a full report was also finalised. Apart from Xavier Ayala's family and other businessmen, it turns out that there is a link to some senators in the national government.

It is inferred from the data analysis that some senators, led by Senator Banzon, wanted Zeus Costales out of his position.

Apparently, Senator Banzon has been eyeing the senate president seat for a long time, but because the president was in good terms with Zeus Costales, he could not find a chance to do so.

But then, when Zeus Costales did not agree on authoring several bills suggested by the president, such as allowing the president to have extended executive powers that will enable him to control every aspect in this country, everything has changed.

The sneaky senators found that an alliance with the Ayala Group and other businessman would be a good opportunity to strike Zeus Costales out.

Just like what I have suspected from the start, it was true that the people behind this didn't just want the Yu business empire to suffer, they also wanted to fully ruin Zeus Costales' image...

The conversation I had with Zeus Costales about this was actually quite memorable.

"It was actually that child, Millen, who influenced my decisions. She never bothered about political things before but once, during a family dinner, she said interesting things that struck my heart. From that point, I have always wondered where she got her new perspectives from... but now that I know that you and her are seeing each other, I could faintly guess how my granddaughter became so politically aware."

I was momentarily surprised, but I managed to give a small smile to Zeus Costales.

"You know, you remind me a lot of my past self..." Zeus said in a nostalgic tone.

I raised my eyebrows a bit at him, amused at his remark.

"I was once like you who was idealistic. But with the temptations of politics, I became crooked. I became another traditional politician... I strayed from my ideals as my greed for power and recognition consumed me. In the end, I put my personal interest over giving true public service."

What should I say? It is not like I cannot deny his statements... but to hear his sentiments now, it makes me even more determined with my resolution.

I would not turn into a trapo... a traditional politician who would lie, cheat and steal just to stay in power.

"I sincerely hope that you would never change your ideals.... Don't be like me. With you and other young leaders, this nation will have hope. Maybe, this nation's wretched system can be truly changed. For once, politicians will not be treated as some kind of godly figures and the presidency will not be treated as something similar to royalty. Maybe with the new generation of young politicians like you, the people will realise that it is these politicians they praise that owe them everything."

I briefly thanked Zeus Costales as we discussed more about politics.

From that, I was able to understand why he said that he reminds his old self in me. Regarding a lot of issues, we surprisingly have the same perspectives...

Indeed, a broken clock is still right twice a day.

I don't even know if I can say that he's still a broken clock, actually. From his narratives, I understood where he was coming from. And from our discussions right now, our ideals surprisingly match, unlike before...

But just like what Zeus Costales have affirmed, I also do not want to make the same mistakes as him. I will not lose track of my vision, no matter how hard it gets.

After all, many of the problems that we have in our government are very deeply institutionalized.

There's norms already in place, and even though they are wrong, they are still being done due to the fact that they've been there for a long time already...

With this, it is very hard to introduce an instant change in a very bureaucratic, procedural, and rigid government.

What matters is finding the right balance... slowly but surely, we will implement changes. We will change this nation for the better and let the public get the governance that they deserve.

I closed my eyes as I finished recalling that memory with Zeus Costales.

It turns out, all the wariness I had towards her family is not really as bad as I thought it would be...

Kenneth Yu might've treasured his wealth the most in this life, but he was not doing any unlawful things. He was not even linked with the estafa scandals and all his business transactions has been legal. All his acquired wealth are gotten through smart and risky business moves.

Zeus Costales, on the other hand, is not that much of a figurehead. He did admit that he was only blinded by power, but he still had morals and visions buried deep within him. Also, it turns out that he will prioritise his family above the temptations of power. He said that he will be quitting from the senate president seat, since he knows that he is no longer competent and he doesn't want to get his family in any implications...

If I was not so rational and did not hold back from the start, I wonder if things would change? If I did not become wary because of Millen's background and publicised our relationship right away, maybe this wouldn't happen?

Xavier Ayala was shocked to core upon finding out that I am connected to Millen... the same can be said to others who were involved in this case too.

They did not expect that Millen was backed by the Zevallos Clan, who cannot be easily messed with.

I bet if they knew, they wouldn't have done something as grotesque as kidnapping Millen. They won't resort to barbaric means like that and she would never be in this state!

They're all being punished now but I am not satisfied. I feel like they deserve to suffer more!

I'll make sure they'll pay for their sins all their life so please... Millen, open your eyes...

You haven't even heard me say those words to you yet...

Still holding Millen's hand, I brought it closer to my face so I can kiss it.

I don't know what I'll turn out to be if I lose this girl.

For some time now, it's almost like I'm living in the hospital. I would do my political duties routinely but whenever I have breaks and after work, I go here straight away.

My goal in this world is only to become a good public servant. But who knew, I could want something much more than that?

I am in love with this woman. She is my heart.

If I lose her one day, I'm afraid that I will lose my mind. I will not be in the right state of mind to rule or do anything functional.

It will take me a long time to heal, and I don't know if I ever will...

God... heavens... I beg you, please give this girl to me. I don't know what will become of me if I lose her...
