Alex's POV

The moment I shut the door to the house, tensions ran high. Thomas was never fond of me to begin with, so naturally, he seemed to be struggling to figure out what to say. I guess you could say we both were.

"Uh, so . . ." I began, drawing his attention away from the floor. "Welcome to our humble abode- the guy who answered the door is my older brother. Martha's my adoptive mother. She's in the kitchen. And my main caregiver is grading papers in his office."

"Isn't your dad Washington?"

"Adoptive dad," I corrected. I had never let myself consider him my actual father. I think I still did deep down, though. "And yes. He'll be at the dinner table if you'd like to ask him about the D you got on yesterday's test."

"What?!" All of Thomas's attention was on me now- he looked genuinely shocked. "I studied all week for that!"

"Wow- you're really gullible- calm down." I couldn't help but smile at the look of confusion that crossed his face. "I have no idea what you got. George doesn't tell me those things."

That look of confusion changed to something I couldn't read. "You, Alexander, are the worst thing since crocs."

I snorted.

Instead of answering, I just moved toward the kitchen, turning my back to Thomas so he wouldn't see the smile that tugged on my lips. I still got a little giddy when people used my full name- and the right one. It just felt amazing being called the name that I wanted. The one that was really me.

I heard a quick hurry of footsteps behind me, and then I was pushed into the kitchen by my brother.

"Jesus Christ watch where you're going!"

"Sorry- you know I gotta get to the bacon first- Ma's is always the best."

"Bacon?"

I jumped at the voice. "Oh yeah- we're having breakfast for dinner."

"We had dinner for breakfast," Martha chimed. "Who's your friend, Alex?"

"Right! This is Thomas- is it ok if he stays for dinner?"

"Of course- there's always room at our table." She smiled politely.

"Wait . . . If you're having breakfast for dinner, and you had dinner for breakfast, what did you have for lunch?"

"Leftovers from dinner-breakfast," James grinned.

"Is this a normal thing in your house?" Thomas asked as he turned to me, although his eyes never left the stove.

"Every Saturday." I nodded.

"Huh." I saw his eyes roam to the bacon.

James noticed too, apparently, because he shouted "Every man for himself!" before diving toward the plate.

Clearly, Thomas had the same idea.

I watched as they shoved each other to get to the bacon first, being careful not to knock into Martha since she's so small. Thomas got to the plate a second before James, grabbing it and turning out of my brother's grasp.

I could see the amusement in Martha's eyes and the annoyance in George's.

Wait-

Oh no.

I stepped aside quickly, watching as George grabbed a dish towel, smacking both James and Thomas on top of the head with it.

They both immediately stopped, and a look of mortification crossed Thomas's features as he realized just who had seen him acting like a lunatic.

He pushed the plate into James's hands, causing a noise of outrage to come from my clone as his mouth dropped open.

George turned his attention to James, who immediately shut up and looked at the plate in his hands, which my adoptive father took away from him.

"We've been over this- I get first dibs- she's my wife and as the father of this household, I am always first to the bacon."

I couldn't help but laugh. "You're the man," I added jokingly.

"Damn right," George nodded. "Hello, Mr. Jefferson. I hope you've come to ask me about that quiz grade you got last week."

"Wait so I did fail?!"

"Nooot fail, necessarily- we can talk about it later- is dinner ready, Dear?" George changed the subject pretty easily.

Martha nodded. "Everything's done- Alex, would you set the table please?"

"Rodger that," I pulled five plates out of the cupboard and set them at each chair.

I was a little surprised when Thomas opened a separate cabinet and grabbed the cups, setting them where I had put the plates. I smiled.

"Thanks."

Thomas nodded in acknowledgment.

He helped me set the rest of the table. I smiled at him. He looked away.

James, Martha, and George brought the food to the table. The two boys took a seat while Martha started serving everyone eggs, bacon, biscuits, gravy, and basically any other breakfast food you can think of. Once everyone was served, she sat down and we started eating.

••••• After Dinner

"That was really good, Mrs. Washington," Thomas said as he leaned back into his chair. "Thank you for having me."

"We'd love to have you again- you've been lovely," Martha smiled. "And please- call me Martha."

"Yes ma'am," he nodded.

George leaned forward in his seat, "I was unaware you and Alex were getting along nowadays. I've never seen you so much as smile at each other in my class."

"Oh- well- we don't. Didn't." Thomas amended. "It's not exactly . . . We don't 'get along' but I don't dislike him."

"I see," George hummed in thought. "Well, it was nice seeing you two talking to each other without screaming."

"Thanks, George," I sighed. "May I be excused?"

"Go," Martha nodded.

I got up from the table, looking over at Thomas in a silent question. He nodded, getting up and following me out of the dining room.

"Your family seems nice," he said once we got to the living room.

"Yeah- they're pretty great. What do you want to do now?"

"Uh- I don't know. I figured you'd have kicked me out by now."

"Oh," I thought for a second. "I could show you my room?"

"Sounds good to me."

I led Thomas upstairs to the room James and I share. You never realize how messy your room is until someone new sees it for the first time.

I immediately became hyper-aware of all of the garbage on our nightstands and the clothes on the floor and beds.

"Sorry, it's kind of . . . Not clean. At all."

"That's fine- my room's worse." He joked.

I sat on my bed. Thomas sat beside me. I smiled at him a little awkwardly. He smiled back this time.

When he pulled out his phone, I grabbed a book I've been working on for a while.

And that was how the rest of the afternoon was spent- just the two of us hanging out.

That was a good Saturday.
