Part 10 - Dibs

Ten years earlier

Dannii/I ride my bike through the neighborhood. My dad told me there is some kind of skating park five minutes from the town center. The perfect place to practice some tricks with my bike. I used to do it all the time in New York.

New End is different, I don't know if I like the countryside just yet. We moved here yesterday, so I guess I'll give it a try first.

The skating park is quite big, enough room to practice. There are a few kids doing the same as me. I doesn't take me too long to make some new friends, I'm a pretty social girl. Ben, Cole, Josh and Jackie introduce themselves by that order and show me around before showing their moves. Apparently Cole and Jackie are twins and 12 years old like me. Their older brother Ben and his friend Josh are both 16 years old.

After a while Cole wants to show me his tricks on the 'big hill'. It's actually a pile of sand, but then again it's big, who am I to judge. Josh has been eyeing me this whole time, like he's in a candy shop, and I'm the tastiest lollipop in the world. Creepy much!

We all follow Cole to the other side of the park and soon I'm joining him to do the trick. No matter how hard I try I can't get enough speed to do the trick right. In one last attempt, I misjudge the distance and I'm thrown over my bike. Falling down I hit the gravel pretty hard. The pain cuts through my knee like a knife. There is a lot of blood gushing out of the cuts. My arms aren't that much better, all scratched up. I try to stand. But my knee hurts to much. Cole is already at the next obstacle.

I try again, this time I'm successful, but not for long, my ears start to ring out and I feel dizzy. I see someone running towards me as I faint. Before I hit the ground and black out, I feel two strong arms catching me.

I'm woken by a cradling movement. When I open my eyes, Ben, is holding me. He's carrying me up, to what I assume is his house. I try to stretch my knee but it hurts so much.

"Don't move, or I'll drop you." He smiles. Reacting to his statement I put my arms around his neck, but that makes me feel every scratch and with that a lot of pain.

"Oh God, what happened?" I clench my teeth, spitting out the words.

He puts me on the table, then tells me I took an ugly fall. Reaching up he opens a cabinet and grabs something to clean out the wounds.

"I don't like blood that m..." I say as I feel him dapping the blood from my elbow, before passing out again on the table.

By the time I return to planet earth, he's done with patching up all the scratches and the cut on my knee.

"Ah, you're back." He cleans his hands and runs his fingers through his blond hair. His smile, all bright white teeth and a cute dimple on the side makes me forget that I'm in pain. For a few seconds I drown in the most beautiful blue eyes, I have ever seen. This boy is gorgeous in an unnatural godly way.

"Thought I'd lost you there for a moment." He chuckles, bringing my thoughts back to the kitchen. A coke is handed to me and Ben urges me to drink, practically pushing the can onto my mouth. "Drink up!"

I take a sip and look at my knee, luckily it's wrapped in a bandage now. No more blood.

"Thank you." I take another sip.

My eyes sting with tears, from the pain. I try to keep them from falling down my face. Be brave. But one slips and roles down anyway.

"It's going to be ok!" Ben cups my cheek and catches the tear with his thumb. "You were pretty badass, if you ask me. My sister Jackie, has never even tried the big hill and she's no pussy!" His eyes glisten as they burn in to mine.

I believe we are having a little moment here! My heart skips a beat and my breathing is heavy. I've never felt like this with a boy before. We get interrupted by Jackie, running into the kitchen. If she hadn't, I'm sure Ben would be giving me my first kiss.

Ben/I hear a knock on my bedroom door. I'm just finished with making an origami flower, with a secret message inside. I made it for Dannii. Yesterday she fell and I want to make her feel better.

This new girl hasn't left my mind since I first saw her, riding towards us yesterday. Don't know if she'll like my gift though. Maybe it's a dumb idea, she's not your typical girl, she's probably not into this girly present I made for her. I don't know much about her, but I can't wait to know everything.

She's Jackies age, but she's much more mature I could tell by talking to her in the kitchen. When I dried her tears away, after I attended to her wounds, I felt so attracted to her. She has the most perfect bronze skin, ocean bleu eyes and a mesmerizing smile. If Jackie hadn't walked in, I would have tried to kiss those perfect pink lips of her. I don't care I've never kissed a girl. I mean a real kiss, not a peck on the lips. I want to have my first real kiss with her.

"Come in."

When Dannii enters, it's like the whole room lights up. Like an idiot I'm smiling at her, can't seem to stop, it hurts my cheeks. I'm frozen in my seat. I didn't expect her to come over.

"I wanted to thank you for yesterday. You know, saving my life and shit." And she swears, I wanna marry this girl.

Dannii shyly giggles under my stare and limps over to me. She hands me a little box, pulling back a string of hair behind her ear, in the process. Her hair looks so silky and soft.

Inside there is a little bicycle on a necklace.

"It's a guys necklace, all my friends wear it in New York!" She ads making sure I don't find it weird or something.

I like it!

"Thanks, I've made something for you... to make you feel better." I give her the paper flower. Her cheeks blush as she studies it. But she smiles a genuine smile.

"Thank you. I should go, my dad's waiting in the car. See you around?" She sounds hopeful.

"Definitely!" I say way to eagerly.

She lingers a moment, before leaving.

"Was that Dannii" my brother barges in moments later. "I want dibs man! She's hot."

"What no!" I'm instantly annoyed by my younger brother. "I talked to her first and cleaned out her wounds, while you were still playing in the sandbox."

"You said your name first. I called dibs first, she's mine. The bro-rule is holy!" He grins like he won a bet or something.

Fucking bro-rule.

Ever since Cole started noticing the other gender he's invented the bro-rule. The first brother that calls dibs, gets the girl. I never cared about it before, girls his age usually don't spark my interest, but now I wish I never went along with his stupid idea.

"Fuck the bro-rule!" I yell. But that makes Cole even more competitive. In no time he's on top of me hitting me with his fist. Although younger, Cole is bigger and stronger then me.

"She's mine, you stay away from her. It's the bro-rule!" He yells giving me another hit in the face.

"Ok! Ok! I'll back off." I don't know what hurts the most, my face or my crushed heart. I don't want to argue with my brother, I don't want to give up Dannii either, but if I fight him on this he'll definitely win. "I'll stay away from her."

Satisfied he walks away, leaving me bruised and angry on my bedroom floor.

Poor Ben having to give up the girl he likes for a stupid kids rule 😠.

Now we know why Dannii had that crush on Ben in High school 😍.
