The Discharge - Irene

I'm waiting with Seulgi, Yeri, and Joy in the waiting room. I'm sitting down, furiously tapping my foot. I can see Joy quickly flipping through a magazine while Yeri is resting her head on Seulgi's shoulder.

Today is the day Wendy gets discharged from the hospital. It's been six weeks without her, and I don't even know how we survived. I don't know how I survived.

We had to perform without her, it was absolutely horrible without Wendy. At the end of some performances, I heard the fans screaming for Wendy. "Get well soon, Wendy!" and "Wendy, we miss you!" were the main ones I could hear from the stage.

Out of everyone in Red Velvet, I think I've been affected the most by Wendy's absence. I haven't been the same during performances, and the rest of the members know. They just don't want to tell me. I'm not the same without Wendy.

I love Wendy.

No, not like that. It can't be like that. I'd lose my job. I'd lose everything. I love her as a sister. That must be it. People's stomachs do flips when they meet their siblings, right? No, that's disgusting. I need to stop thinking about this now.

"Guys," I suddenly hear Seulgi and snap back to life. "Look."

I get up so fast that my head begins to hurt. I peek around the corner and I see Wendy with crutches walking with a doctor.

The smile on my face must catch Wendy's attention because I'm the first one she looks at. Her face instantly lights up as she shouts, "Unnie!" across the hall.

I run over to her and give her a hug that almost knocks her over. "Wendy," I say, digging my head into her shoulder.

"Unnie," she says, "I can't breathe."

I loosen my grip on her but I don't let go. I don't know how long it is before Joy pries me apart from her. Wendy's still smiling at me when I stand next to Yeri and Seulgi. Joy gives Wendy a hug, then Yeri, then Seulgi.

The doctor looks at us once we're finished our little reunion. "Make sure she lays low for a few days. She can still perform but I recommend she just doesn't dance for now."

"Of course, sir," Joy says.

"Thank you for taking care of her," Yeri says.

We stand in silence as I stare at Wendy with a huge smile on my face. Seulgi's phone beeps, "Our limo is here."

"I'll help Wendy to the car," I say, grabbing her arm. "You guys can go."

Joy smirks at me while she leaves to walk with Yeri and Seulgi to the limo. I make eye contact with Wendy again. "Can you walk without them?"

"I can, but I'll be limping," Wendy says. "Why? Want to hold my hand?"

My cheeks get hot. "No. You can use the crutches."

I can see Wendy's smile fade slightly as she tries to think of something else to say. "Okay. Just don't walk that fast then."

I nod and I take slow steps while keeping my gaze fixed on Wendy. I can't help but smile at her, she makes my stomach flip in ways I didn't think it could. When we finally get to the limo, I grab Wendy's arm once again in attempt to bring her to the other side so we can sit together, but Joy stops me.

"Sit here, Wendy," Joy says. She looks directly at me when she says this. She wants a reaction out of me. She's suspicious of me. I try hard not to do anything but my eyes twitch and Joy gets the reaction she wanted.

Wendy looks at and opens her mouth like she's about to say something but nothing comes out. "You can go to the other side, Irene."

I let go of her arm and go to the other side. Seulgi pats the seat next to her where I sit down. Yeri and Seulgi are chatting about old memories and then Yeri brings up Eric.

Everyone starts laughing as we remember Yeri's crush on Eric.

"He was really handsome," Joy then says.

"Yeah, I understand why you were all flustered," Seulgi says to Yeri. Then Joy looks at me. "What about you, Irene? You never mentioned anything about Eric. You didn't even look that flustered."

I swallow and sit up straighter. "Eric just isn't my type."

"Eric's everyone's type," Yeri jokes, but then Joy agrees and I'm forced to talk more.

"He just didn't appeal to me," I say, shifting in my seat.

Wendy notices me struggling. "We all know how Irene is with men. Her standards are just really high."

I meet Wendy's eyes. She gives me a slight smile and I nod. "Yeah."

"Whatever you say, Irene," Joy says. As much as I love Joy, she can be a bit much sometimes.

I'm thankful Wendy did what she did. Nobody here can know.

I'm in love with Wendy.
