*Knock knock knock*
"Niall."
*Knock knock knock*
"Niall."
I hear the lock click before the door slowly opens, revealing a red-faced Irishman. "What do you want, Liam?" Niall inquires, his voice laced with an unreadable emotion.
"I wanted to make sure that you're alright… I mean, I heard the door slam and figured something is wrong, so I came to check up on you..." I mumble, feeling guilty for the umpteenth time since getting home.
"Oh. Sorry. I'm fine. Is that all you need? Wonderful. I'll talk to you later then," Niall replies, talking so quickly that I barely register what he's said before the door to his room is closing.
Well that was interesting, I think to myself. I force myself to push away all of the questions forming in my head about what's wrong with my boyfriend, choosing instead to make that call back to Will. I walk away from Niall's bedroom and into the spare room where I pull out my phone and dial the number for Will's personal cellphone.
"Ah, Mr. Payne. I was wondering when you planned to return my call," One Direction's manager says as soon as he picks up the phone. "Now tell me, where were we?"
I scratch the back of my head, attempting to recall our conversation from earlier. "I, uh, believe you were asking me what I overheard," I reply after a moment of silence.
"Yes, of course. What has got you so worried, Liam?"
I squeeze my eyes shut, trying to think of a way to explain to my manager that I'm scared because my boyfriend was dreaming about marriage. That is, without sounding entirely mental. "Well, you see, I heard… Uhm, I heard him talking in his sleep and, uh, it sounded like he was dreaming about, uh…"
"Go on," Will encourages.
"Well, it sounded like he was dreaming about marriage, which is a scary concept for me when I'm not even 20 yet. Heck, I'm not even 19 yet!"
Will sighs before responding again. "Liam, the future is always going to be scary, especially when it comes to romance. If you're worried about this, it means that you're being rational, but it also means that you aren't ready for that right now. I would suggest talking to Niall about where you see your relationship going from wherever it is now, but you can't keep pushing him away; all you're doing is hurting yourself and your boyfriend by doing this."
"I know. I-I'll try to talk to him as soon as possible, Will. Thank you."
"I just want to see you and Mr. Horan happy, Liam. Tell the rest of the boys that there will be another meeting with management on Thursday night at 8 to go over the details of your stay in Switzerland and to finish discussing this whole ordeal with the two mystery girls you and Niall were with today," Will orders. "Oh, and have a nice night."
"You too, Will," I add before hanging up. Well, looks like we have a busy few weeks ahead.
Instead of heading back into the livingroom to talk to the other lads, I tiptoe my way to the guest bedroom and silently shut the door. I move the pillows up against the headboard before sitting down and leaning back, preparing myself to spend some time thinking everything over.
What am I doing? I ask myself. Is it such a bad thing for me to be scared for the future? It wouldn't be so scary if I was a bit older or a bit healthier. I mean, what would happen if my only working kidney were to fail? If I were engaged or married to Niall, where would that leave him?
I groan audibly, holding my head in my hands. Why is it all so confusing? If only I could be more certain... Oh!
I jump up from the bed and run into the livingroom where Harry, Louis, and Zayn are watching the news. I make it to the front door and slip into my shoes before the other lads notice me, turning to stare at me.
"Where are you going in such a rush?" Zayn queries.
"I need to make a call to someone," I clarify, placing my hand on the doorknob. "Also, we have a meeting with management at 8 on the night of August 9th to go over everything one more time before we leave on Friday morning. Toodles!"
I scurry out the door, ignoring the outcries of my friends. I run down the hall to where my own flat is located, thankful that we all got apartments in the same building. After fiddling with my keys for a few minutes, the lock clicks and I throw the door open, running over to my refrigerator.
I sift through a number of business cards and photos that are all over my fridge until I find the card with my doctor's number on it. I take out my phone for what feels like the hundredth time today and add the number for Dr. Thompson as a contact in my phone. After ensuring that my doctor's number is finally saved in my phone, I dial said number.
"Hello, this is Dr. Thompson's office. How may I help you?" a woman asks on the other end of the line.
"Uh, yes, hello. I need to speak with Dr. Thompson please," I reply.
"Dr. Thompson is in a meeting..."
"Listen, I need you to go tell Dr. Thompson that Mr. Payne is calling, please. I'm begging you," I plead.
The woman sighs and I can hear low whispers in the background before she says anything else to me. "I will see what I can do, Mr. Payne. I'm going to put you on hold for a few minutes while I go see if the doctor is available," she finally responds.
I wait as patiently as I can while listening to the radio music on the line, chuckling to myself when What Makes You Beautiful starts playing. A few songs later the music disappears and is replaced by a male voice.
"Mr. Payne? This is Dr. Thompson. Is something wrong?" my doctor questions.
"Uh, not exactly. I wanted to see about making an appointment to check-up on my kidneys," I admit, nervously running my free hand through my hair. "As soon as possible, preferably.
"Just a moment," the doctor says. I listen to the sound of typing and clicking until the doctor's voice comes back on the line. "The earliest I can get you in for a full check-up is on Tuesday at half past noon. That is the only time we'll be able to get you in for a sonogram of your kidneys before late October," he tells me.
"That is perfect," I breathe, having been worried about the fact that I would be leaving in a week.
"Alright, I'll see you then. Thank you for calling, Mr. Payne," Dr. Thompson concludes.
"No, thank you," I reply before the line goes dead.
Now to wait out the next five days...
