Chapter 21

“Well, I think that’s all it.” Danielle wiped her hand on her jeans. She was helping her mother pack her clothes into a bag, because today, Mrs. Roberts was permitted to check out from the hospital.

“Yes, I think your right.” Mrs. Roberts sat on the bed. “I can’t wait to go home.”

“Yup, I know how you feel mom.” Danielle smiled.

Just then, Charlotte and Stephanie burst into the room.

“Whoa, whoa, what’s wrong with you guys?” Danielle asked. “Looks like you’ve seen a ghost or something.”

“Nah, we just wanted to come early.” Charlotte smiled.

“How come you’re not at school Annie?” Danielle raised her right eyebrow.

“Ahh, I took the day off.”

“You can take day offs at school? Isn’t that call skipping school?”

“Kind of, but in a nicer way to say it.” Stephanie laughed.

“Yeah right.” Danielle rolled her eye. “Help mom bring these bags to my car will ya?”

“Whoa mom,” Stephanie took the bags from Danielle’s hands. “Looks like you’ve lived in the hospital for a year, what with all these clothes and bags.” She was weighted down by the bags.

Slowly, Stephanie struggled to the door. “Might need a bit help here?”

Charlotte came and helped Stephanie pick up the bags. They put the bags in Danielle's car, and Charlotte left Stephanie to wait in the car while she went to help Danielle and Mrs. Roberts.

“Be right back ok?”

Quickly, Charlotte went back inside the hospital.

The doctor came into the room, holding a file of papers and a few bottles of medicine.

“Here we go,” the doctor handed Mrs. Roberts some bottled medicine and pills. “I want you to eat this every morning, before breakfast, and this one,” the doctor pulled a bottled medicine into Mrs. Roberts’s hand.” This one you have to eat three times daily, after meal. Get it?”

Danielle and Mrs. Roberts nodded.

The doctor looked at Danielle and gave her a weak smile.

“Sorry about yesterday.” The doctor apologized. “Didn’t know it was bad news for you.”

“What bad news? What are you talking about?” Mrs. Roberts asked.

“Oh, and I have a medicine for you too Danielle,” the doctor continued talking, ignoring Mrs. Roberts. “It’s pain killer. I want you to eat this every time you have a pain in your stomach or cramp, in the middle of the night, or things like that, okay?”

Danielle was frightened her mother would figure out what the doctor was talking about. She didn’t want the doctor to talk about her condition in front of her mother, until her mother knows the truth.  Danielle hoped the doctor would stop talking, but apparently the doctor seems to not understand her at that moment.

“Why are you giving her medicines?” Mrs. Roberts asked again.

“Oh, it for her baby.” The doctor gave Danielle a weak smile. “You know, when kids like her get pregnant, for the first time, and at such a young age, well, lots of problems come!”

Mrs. Roberts’s mouth was wide open. But she didn’t say anything.

“Well, looks like we’re done here eh?” the doctor smiled and walked out of the room. “Remember to eat your medicines Danielle!”

Mrs. Roberts sat on the hospital bed. She was shocked.

“Are- are y-you pregnant, Danielle?”

“Mom, liste-“

“no.” Mrs. Roberts face hardened.  “I ask you, are you pregnant?”

Danielle shut her eyes and bit her lips. “yes.” She whispered slowly.

Mrs. Roberts’s face was expressionless. She was shocked, angry, sad, disappointed.

“When did this happen? Is it Greyson’s?” her voice, soft, but tensed.

Danielle didn’t want to answer. “No, mom listen to-“

“I ask you Danielle, and you answer me!” Mrs. Roberts’s voice rose.

“Yes. It’s Greyson’s. It happened on the tour.” Tears started to sprang into Danielle’s eyes.

“I should never have let you go.”

“Mom, LISTEN to me, it wasn’t-“

“NO YOU LISTEN TO ME.” Mrs. Roberts’s face red with anger. “I TRUSTED YOU DANIELLE, I GAVE YOU MY FULL TRUST. I BELIEVED IN YOU. I KNOW YOU WOULDN’T GO AROUND FOOLING WITH BOYS UNTIL YOU GET PREGNANT! BUT, you betrayed my trust.” Tears fell from her eyes.

“mom-“

“Don’t, Mom me, Danielle. Don’t.” Mrs. Roberts closed her eyes. “I told you about your dad, I explained to you, why I didn’t want to let you go. I told you one of my darkest secret, hoping you would understand, but this is what you give me in return?! I told you,” Mrs. Roberts paused. “I told you because I thought you were old enough to understand, I told you because I know you will not do it. You will not do the same mistake that I did!”

“No, MOM LISTEN! I WILL NEVE-“

“Do you know the risk Danielle?” Mrs. Roberts’s voice rose higher by the minute. “Do you know what’ll Greyson do when he finds out? Do you? He’ll dump you. Leave you. Why? Because he has the public looking up on him. What would they say when they know he has made you pregnant?!”

“Mom, Greyson is not like that! He would ne-“

“Yeah, you think he would never leave you, the same way I thought your father wouldn’t.” Tears started to ran down Mrs. Roberts’s cheek like rain. “But that’s just what boys do, believe me Danielle, I have lived longer than you. Believe me Danielle, when a boy gets what he wants, he’ll move on. Now you, wouldn’t believe me, I know! Why?” Mrs. Roberts stopped to wipe the tears off her eyes.

“Because you are enchanted by his words, enchanted by the stuffs he give you, enchanted by the songs he write for you, star-stricken by the love words he says to you, the smiles, and the promises.  You ‘ll never know what his real intensions are.”

Danielle was sobbing loudly now. Charlotte remained silent beside the door. Mrs. Roberts was crying on the bed.

“I gave you my trust, and you threw it away like trash. You betrayed my trust.”

“Mom! I WILL N-“

“Don’t talk to me Danielle, just,” Mrs. Roberts turned her face away from Danielle. “Don’t talk to me...”

Mrs. Roberts took her clutches and walked out of the room.
