/9/ When She Stood Up

[JAO]

I guess I will never be enough.

Nobody will understand how eager I am to prove that I am worthy of this family. My older brothers are both lawyers from a prestigious university, they're always telling me to keep up because I'm such a noob.

My dad is also a lawyer, but he's always busy because of his political agendas. My mom's attention is solely focused on my younger brother; they're both on abroad at the moment.

Ah, my younger brother. He's the reason why I'm being mocked by my older brothers. My younger brother is a member of Mensa, an international society for those who have high IQ; he's literally the genius in this family.

And me? I'm being left behind. Dalawa ang goal ko ngayong school year, ang makagraduate as class valedictorian, and to pass the UPCAT, dahil kailangan sa UP ako mag-aral ng college. Family tradition, I guess. My parents are both UP alumna and my brothers too.

That's why every single night, I'm studying hard. I need those energy drinks to keep me up, hindi ako pwedeng magsayang ng oras dahil napag-iiwanan na ako. Every summer ay nasa review center ako para mag-aral, matagal ko na 'tong pinaghahandaan. I will succeed to prove to my brothers that I can keep up.

That's why these strangers don't know what they're saying. Nag-aalala sila sa'kin dahil huwag daw akong magpakamatay sa grades? Hindi ako nagpapakamatay, I'm just doing what I need to do.

"Get out."

I shouldn't invite them here.

"Your visitors are gone?" nakita ko si Kuya Dan sa may pintuan ko, nakahalukipkip at nakangisi. "Mom called by the way. Kinakamusta ka niya."

"A-Anong sinabi mo?"

"Well, I said you're doing great," pumasok sa loob si Kuya Dan at tiningnan ang mga libro ko sa study table, "sinabi ko na nag-aaral ka nang mabuti. You know, you have to keep up with our little bro. And, you'll surely pass the UPCAT, right?"

I didn't answer him. Gusto ko siyang palabasin pero wala akong lakas ng loob. Until our parents are not in the house he's in charge. Living with him is torture. Kada makikita niya ako ay palagi niyang pinapamukha sa'kin na hindi ako magaling.
