"Okay. Thank you" I stuffed the bill into my pocket of my jeans

"Why I can't get 10 dollars too?" Neveah asked with an attitude

"Whatchu need money for Veah?"

"Snacks at lunch"

Momma went over to one of the wooden overhead cabinets and grabbed the box of teddy grahams, pulled one out and gave it to Neveah "there go a snack right there. Now hush"

Veah rolled her eyes and I snickered before leaving. I headed down the road, passing by brick houses that were similar to mine, but theirs were a little nicer and bigger. Sometimes I want to ask my mom how do she think we would be living if my dad was still alive, but I always refrain from asking that question.

Although it was August, it was hot as hell like it could be June, making me wish I would've put on a pair of shorts instead of jeans. I glanced down at the fresh vans I wore then looked up seeing I arrived to my bus stop. The same kids I've rode the bus with for years stood around waiting as well

"You made it right on time" Tremaine, one of the guys, laughed a little while looking at me then down the road. I followed his glance and saw the bus turning the corner

"Good cause I don't have time to miss the bus"

"Yo momma would've beat that ass. That's whatchu mean"

"Yeah you tried it" I responded and he laughed. The bus stopped in front of us and we all took turns getting on. As I got on I went straight to my normal place every year, the back and pulled out my IPhone 7, grabbed my headphones and put them in. As the bus started moving I looked straight ahead, watching as everybody spoke with their friends. With my music turned up as loud as possible I tunes out the world, closing my eyes while I sat alone for the rest of the bus ride. Once we got to the school and the bus stopped I looked out the window seeing people standing around talking and goofing around. Since it was the first day back to school everybody was dressed their best, girls had fresh weave or braids and all the boys had their hair cut, dreads retwisted or some type of fashion.

I ran my hands through my braids, this being my signature look because they were inexpensive since my momma did them for me. Once the bus started to clear up I finally decided to get up and walk off, smelling a little musk in the air

"It's too early in the morning to already be musky" I fanned the air with my face scrunched up.

Once I finally made it off the bus I looked around and just as I started to walk towards the building I heard my name being called making me look back. My best friend Akira waved over at me as she got out of her daddy's silver Buick LaCrosse

Unlike me, Akira came from an upper middle class family consisting of her, her parents and her brother Christian who was a senior varsity player on the basketball team. Although Akira has money, she was very humble and although a lot of people liked her, she picked her friends very carefully which is why we've been friends for over the past 10 plus years. I loved her and her family so much because not only did they treat me like their own, but they accepted me for who I am without judging. As she walked over to me I looked at her outfit, a peach two piece outfit that looked good on her clean dark skin, white sandals and white accessories to match. Her hair was freshly done with wavy virgin hair and she wore her signature white stiletto nails

"I thought you was gonna see if you could come to my house yesterday so we could pick out our outfit together. I was waiting on you to text back"

"My phone was acting stupid and plus I had to watch after my brothers and sister cause momma worked late last night"

"Oh. Well you think you can ride home with me today? I got some stuff I wanna show you and plus my momma said she's cooking that baked potato casserole that you love so much" she told me with a grin and I laughed

"I'll see with momma"

"Let me ask her. You know she can't tell me no" Akira smiled and I rolled my eyes

"You swear you one of my momma's kids"

"Cause I am. She already told me I'm her favorite"

"Ain nobody paying that lady no attention" I told Akira while I reached into the side o my bookbag and pulled out my schedule "lemme see your schedule"

She reached into her purse and unfolded hers, handing it to me. Being that our school was average sized I was pretty sure we already had 90% of our classes together and once I looked at her schedule that confirmed it. We had all but our last class together and that one class was regular English for her while I was put in a senior English class

"Why you ain't in honors?"

Akira sighed "girl after my grades last year, im not surprised. English was hard as shit. All them papers. I'm not even mad I got regular English"

"You gotta get on that for next year Kira" I told her in a motherly voice and she mocked me

"You sound like my momma right now"

"So"

"Shut up. Let me see who you got for English" she grabbed my schedule while we started walking into the building. "You got Mrs. Stevenson with Christian"

"Forreal?"

"Yeah. Good luck. Christian was complaining about that lady since he got his schedule at registration. He said she's nosey and aggravating as hell"

"Oh lord. As long as she let me be and let me do my work in peace, we won't have problems"

"Try doing work with Christian aggravating ass around. Ain't gone ever get done and you know that"

"As long as I sit on the other side of the class from him I'll be perfectly fine" I told her while opening the door and we walked inside the school

2:00 pm

"You told me you was gone hit me up and I ain heard from you all summer. Should've known all you wanted was some pussy" some girl fussed at Christian while the teacher was in the middle of calling the roll. I laughed a little and I guess Christian heard me because he glanced over at me before responding back to the girl

"I said I was gone hit you up later. I ain say what time later"

"Nigga you ain shit" one of his friends laughed.

Although Christian was a good person at the heart, he was a hoe. I've watched how he bounced from one hoe to the next like it was a game of hot potato.

"Hoskins...Egypt Hoskins" Mrs. Stevenson called my name and I raised my hand

"She in this class?" Essence, one of the other seniors in the class asked. Essence lived not too far down the road from me and just like some people, she loved to poke fun at the way I lived but I would often ignore it

"Hey Egypt" she called out, meaning she was getting ready to do or say something stupid. I looked over at her and she wore a grin while pushing her bone straight bundles back, making her long forehead pop even more

"What?"

"Ya momma still cleaning rooms at that hotel?"

One of her friends laughed and Christian must've heard her because he looked at her some type of way

"Yo momma still fuckin the boss for a bonus?" Christian asked her and she looked at him some type of way

"Boy you got me fucked up"

"Nah you fucked up tryina come for her and she ain bother you. And ain none of y'all gone bother her as long as I'm in this class" he defended me. Essence rolled her eyes at him and turned to face her friend again

"Anyways.." she started talking and I looked over at Christian

"You ain gotta do tha-"

"No fuck that. You gone forever be straight as long as you around me. You hear me?"

I nodded and Christian looked at me for a while before turning to finish talking to his friends and I let out a sigh facing the front
