Back in Scutter's Landing, tears fall uninhibitedly from Kip's eyes, still holding on to the half-breed's black jewel, which he now knows is The Pit of the Forest. He can't bear to witness any more of what Barne had to endure. That is what truly brought the half-breed's smile alive—to simply forget the past, forget the pain.
Ignorance might be good enough for the half-breed, but it isn't good enough for Kip, who believes in setting things right, no matter the cost.
Still with endless tears in his eyes, Kip helps Barne to his feet.
"Come, we're going to restore your people, your body, and your rightful place in the forest. And nothing, I repeat, nothing will stand in our way...because that's the only thing that will make me smile...ever again."
