Chapter Fourteen, pt 3

Start from the beginning

Roy snorts. "Didn't the last golem turn to dust?"

I whisper to Auntie El. "Why is Chief making him do that?"

"It is part of his training to become a sage."

"But isn't he Lord Sol's successor? Shouldn't he be the one to test him?"

Lord Sol interrupt us. "I am testing him, by making him learn beside Kinai. Because his earth magic is in every respect strong amongst the elves, he needs to pass Chief's test as well to be deemed worthy of the title."

He says to Chief, "Honestly though, that is quite a task you've given him."

It's a rite of passage before he is officially accepted as a member of a society consisting of the strongest beings of this world. Should I be more self-conscious of my behaviours right now? At some point, this feels like a disciplinary committee meeting to determine how to deal with, as Lord Sol puts it, my "peculiar eccentricity".

"Luda is qualified and strong. There is enjoyment for a dwarf to witness his own disciple suffer to achieve success."

Chief's assertion results in Luda's mixed reaction. It's quite understandable from Chief's perspective; you can't put a person in a pedestal from the beginning or else they will never learn to achieve anything.

Wait a moment. Does that purposely-make-my-own-disciple-suffer plan apply with me too? Is he going to assign an impossible task to me as a condition of graduating as his apprentice? When I inwardly consider the possibilities of what it could be, Lord Sol resume the meeting.

"We're straying from the main topic. Luda will take over Iris's lessons from Chief and Roy will assist Lorelai in Iris's ranger training until the evaluation."

Lord Sol quickly finish his words before he gets interrupted again.

Roy look towards Lord Sol in surprise and says, "Is that why you keep pestering me by sending all those signals for me to return five months ahead of our usual arrangement?"

"That is because you tend to disappear and reappear someplace else." Lord Sol refutes. "With your experience as a mercenary, Lorelai recommended that you are well-suited in teaching Iris regarding her fighting skills. You are the only one who has been journeying the human lands recently. It will benefit her to learn the common sense of men too. From the report during her short time at the mining town, she carelessly used magic without chanting in front of many adventurers and healers."

I awkwardly smile in response.

"Let's not forget the mana arrow." Lord Sol shoot a sharp glance my way. "Since you used it to save a life, I will let that pass."

"Mana arrow?"

"You will see soon enough." Lord Sol says. "She's been training with elves and does not comprehend the difference in strength. I need you to teach her that."
