Prologue

100 years before Kiara~

The wind whistled through the cracked glass. Curtains billowed as the dark figure crept across the room. Her father had put up more of a fight than expected. No, not her father. The victim. The target. A bundle of organs, blood and muscle held together with a layer of skin. A miserable creature to be put out of its misery.

Hood let the knife fall. Crimson droplets created bright red flowers on the carpet. Hood. Previously known to all as Little Red Riding Hood. Sports star, kickboxer, fencer. Academically gifted student, especially in biology and chemistry. That was Red, all right. Now though, she was known as Hood.

Assassin. Murderer. Guilty of parricide and fratricide. A young women, no longer with a soul. Hood was the latest victim of the Witcher, who had torn out her spirit, turned her heart to obsidian and filled her up with foul dark magic.

Walking faster now, Hood caught a glimpse of herself in a mirror. Long, blonde hair stained with blood, torn red cape and a white blouse barely holding in her bosom. A pretty face, sharp nose and full lips, marred by a sneer of hatred and animalistic bloodlust.

Hood turned away, deciding to cut her hair short at the nearest opportunity. But not before the job was over. Not before she had wiped out the only remaining member of her family. The woman who had cared for her and tended to her even more than her mother. Who she had so lovingly gifted with cakes and jams.

 Grandmother.

Hood smiled at the thought as she strode away from the house. Had she turned, she would have seen the remains of her cruelty. A red streak on her brothers window. A white hand lolling uselessly out the door. But she didn't turn. Hood only had eyes for the path ahead.

Unbeknown to Hood, her murderous acts had not gone unseen. A pair of eyes, of purest amber, watched from the shadows. A great, furry paw gripped the bark of the tree beside him with such angry, saddened passion that the branch splintered.

He had been too late to save the parents or the brother, but he was damned if he was going to let Hood kill his only friend.

Mac Tire, also known as the Big Bad Wolf, howled at the moon, then turned and began the race to the cottage in the woods.

Hood heard the howl and knew what it meant. She started to run, drawing yet another knife from within her cloak as she did. She heard scratchings and thumps from behind her, but she was almost as fast as the wolf, infested and powered as she was with dark magic.

She felt the air move and jumped, twisted and slashed. The dark shape fell back slightly, tiny drops of blood spattering Hood's blouse.

She completed the spin and kept running. She could see the house ahead of her. Grandmother had apparently heard the howl as well as she was standing in the doorway, loaded pistol in hand.

Of course, when Grandmother saw Hood covered in blood, and Mac Tire running at her with a cut on his nose and a feral look in his eye, there was only one feasible explanation.

Mac Tire had obviously been unable to keep his primal instincts at bay as Hood had walked past, scantily clad. Hood had fought back, had been hurt, and now she was running to the safety of her Grandmothers home. In Grandmothers eyes, the enemy was Mac Tire, her oldest friend. She raised the pistol and pointed it at the wolf.

Then noticed something.

Hood wasn't wearing her pendant. The one Grandmother had given her as protection against the Witcher and her minions. Which meant it had been broken. By dark magic.

The realisation hit her just as Hood did. Mac Tire moved quickly and tore the screaming girl from Grandmothers chest and bit her arm hard, drawing blood. Grandmothers pistol went off, the lead ball striking Hood in the ear. Hood howled, higher and louder than the wolf had as something burst from deep inside her. A ball of black energy pulsated from Hoods chest, throwing back Grandmother and Mac Tire. When the light faded, Hood was gone. After a moments silence, Mac Tire spoke.

"The Witcher is growing stronger."

Grandmother nodded.

"We need to call a meeting of the Council."

Again, Grandmother nodded.

"And we need to get hold of the Grimm spawn. The one who will save us."

Grandmother hesitated. Then she nodded.
