After his mother died his father killed himself. Bucky lost everything when his father died. His sister went to boarding school, because he was too young to care for her. Sarah Rogers had taken custody of him and he had been brought up with lifelong bestfriend Steve Rogers who had also lost his father at a young age.
In a matter of months he felt like her son and she had treated him with nothing but kindness. Bucky had protected Steve when he was bullied because of his smaller frame and loved him like a brother.
Years later Sarah died and he had been there for Steve through ever moment of the tough time. He knew how Steve felt, he had been through it three times.
Bucky and Steve enrolled in military school to save money, both of them planed to go to the army and it was just the cheapest, quickest way to do so.
Steve was all Bucky had and Bucky was all Steve had. They were content together.
