*Elizabeth's P.O.V.*
This was the last summer break before I graduated high school. I was currently on the train heading back to MayorsWood, the place I called home till I was seven. My mother packed me off to Starlington High which was a regular boarding school where I had made friends who turned into family over the decade.
My mom, Penelope, chose the simple small town life while giving me a journey that I could never forget. At first I was stubborn and afraid but I remembered her saying to me at the gates of the school "Liza, this is really what's best for you dear. Trust me. You're gonna be just fine" and kissed my forehead with tears in her eyes.
I did and she was more than right. Summers back home were something I wouldn't miss for the world. The train stopped at the familiar MayorsWood Old Station and I grabbed my bags, eager to be home after almost an entire year.
I hailed a cab and plugged in my earphones for the short ride home. I was starting to get a strong migraine out of nowhere. These had started to become quite common over the past few months along with weird mood swings. I guess that's puberty taking a late swing at me.
The sun had gone down and rain drops began to hit the cab windows. I rolled down the window and inhaled the scent of the fresh rain and trees and everything MayorsWood. Everything home. It rained almost all the time in the all too cozy neighborhood embedded into Northern Hills Forest Reserves. Even the summers saw a persistent cloud cover.
As the cab reached up towards the curb, I opened the doors almost before it fully halted and was already getting my bags out before the nice cabbie came out back to offer me help. I could manage pretty well by myself. After all, the intense physical training given at Starlington's was more than I could have asked for. I paid the cabbie and ran up the porch steps just as my mother opened up the doors and engulfed me in her arms. She smelled like.. home. For a single mom she did look spectacularly well kept. She ran a little bakery a few blocks away and never ceased to amaze me with the cutest cupcakes. When i was little she'd let me assess her latest cupcake inventions before putting it on the shelves.
"Liza, Honey look at you" She said pulling away and examining me "You're growing more and more beautiful each time I see you"
I almost rolled my eyes at her "Like mother, like daughter" I said with a soft chuckle and threw a wink her way. She was almost above forty-five but definitely looked less than thirty some would say but hey who would ask a woman her age. Her dark hair was pulled back into a ponytail and she was wearing a pale pink blouse paired with faded denim jeans.
The smell of fresh chocolate chip cookies wafted my way and I followed it into the kitchen. Of course she made my favorites. Our house was not too small or too large. Just perfect and cozy.
"How was the school year?" She threw in casually as I grabbed a cookie from the tray that was on the counter.
"Not too bad" I said between bites, realizing I was famished. "Headmaster Abraham even said I could finish up early and apply to some universities upstate maybe."
"That's wonderful" she said, her green eyes twinkling "Honey, why don't you go and get some rest. Oh I almost forgot I have something for you. I will be right back."
With that she went up to her bedroom before i could ask her anything. She returned moments later to hand me a tiny wooden box with an intricate P engraved on it.
"It has been passed down in the family and I wanted to give it to you when you turned eighteen. " She said, motioning for me to open it. I was a bit taken aback by this.
"Mom, but I have three more months for my birthday and-" I started.
"I know honey but you would be back in school before then and this is something that's too special to wait" She spoke almost too fast and I could feel this is a special moment for her. I opened the box to find a little silver pendant with a tiny bird engraved onto it. I gasped. It was beyond beautiful.
"Mom, this is beautiful" was all I could manage before giving her a tight hug. I pulled back and she placed it onto my neck to tie it up for me as I held my long platinum hair out of the way.
I grabbed a few more cookies and headed upstairs to my room to unwind. I heard the doorbell ring and instantly knew who that would be. I was about to unpack my bags as the door flew open and Carlie my childhood best friend dashed in threw herself at me.
"Elizabeth Hudson!!" she squealed at the top of her lungs as I caught her in a hug and almost lifted her off her feet. She was slightly shorter than I was and had a petite but curvy figure.
"Carlie how have you been?" I said as she plopped onto my bed.
"Never better", she gave me a dazzling smile as always.
She was sporting a cute black dress and a pair of red bottoms. Her long brown hair fell in perfectly crafted soft curls down her shoulders and I could tell she was all glammed up "Going somewhere?"
"We are." She said and there was that all too familiar mischievous look in her kohl rimmed crystal blue eyes and I knew she was up to no good. But hey, I loved her nonetheless. Who would pull her out of the consequences of her careless decisions otherwise? She was the rock to my roll and the drug to my soul. Cheesy. I know.
"Girl you've gotten a foot taller since the last time I saw you, I swear" She was eyeing me up and down "And your literally glowing.. Is it some boy? Spill now!"
