It was the next morning and I was abruptly awoken from troubled chatter. I sat up rubbing the sleep from my eyes before glancing at everyone with a headcount. Wait...12... I jolted into a stance and peered around the group to uncover who was gone. But all the crew seemed to be here, well besides, I spun to where The Captin had fallen asleep the previous night.
"Taylor, The Captin be missin'," Daniel, one of the low ranked crew members pointed out. I rolled my eyes, sauntering over to The Captin's previous sleeping area and knelt down. I peered along the area in search of clues before resting my eyes upon faint tracks that led out of camp.
"Tom, Jeremy, follow me, the rest of ya, make yerselves useful," I ordered before following the tracks out of the camp, Tom and Jeremy eagerly following behind. I abruptly stopped in my tracks noticing something suspicious, Tom stopped a few steps behind me. There was a sudden muffled scream as Jeremy disappeared from our brigade. "Tom," I instructed, he nodded retreating back along our path. Within minutes Tom returned, his head tilted to the ground.
"It had been too late," Tom apologised.
"That complete addle," I insulted under my breath, he had such a bright future. "This island be addlely bobby trapped," I explained before stepping off the rocky trodden path to avoid the carefully laid trap. Tom followed my movements as we continued advancing forward watching out for any more traps. A sudden glint caught my eye, I crouched down to pick up a chipped dagger that had belonged to The Captin. I glanced up to my left, my breath caught in my throat as I was met with a horrific sight. Shotting up I bolted the short distance to where The Captin laid, his clothes stained crimson...I bent down to check his nonexistent pulse. "He was stabbed," I declared, gently taking his hat before rising to my feet. "As my Father's successor and The Captin's first mate, I rightfully inherit his rank and what is left of our crew," I declared, turning to Tom who nodded in response.
As we returned to camp, everyone's gaze turned to us, their expressions turning glum and worryful. I pulled out The Captin's dagger, swiftly sending into the tree that stood behind Mason, another low ranked crew member. "The Captin's dagger," Mason exclaimed turning around to see the dagger.
"He be dead, stabbed to death by a filthy scallywag," I announced taking a seat where The Captin once sat.
