"... and with that said, how do you find the missing value assuming the tangent line is perpendicular to the radius." the teacher rambles on about trigonometry, her pesky annoying voice bores and ticks every student listening. no one bothers to answer, as she impatiently taps her heels on the carpeted floor.
"well, guys? what's the answer?" she says before getting cut off by the bell.
i grab my backpack and left, occasionally waving to people in the hallway. once i made it to my locker, it was slam shut by a male senior in high school. his dirty brown hair was highlighted with blonde streaks, combed over to one side, leaving a weird pattern in his hair.
i give him a plain expression. "what do you need?"
"aw, don't act like ya' don't like me or sumthin'," he replies, grinning at me.
"i do not, princeton." i try opening my locker again, but it was closed once more.
"babe, no need to get so formal with me, just call me prince. you know i could be your prince charming, right?" princeton suggests, smirking at me in a playful manner.
i sigh, a ghost of a smile left on my lips. i place my books in my locker and proceeded to leave school.
"are you coming or what?" i ask, turning my head to face him.
"c-charlotte, wait up!"
___
we wait on the bleachers for cindy, waiting for her softball practice to be over. it was getting colder as dusk started to rise.
i glance at princeton staring at cindy in pure admire. if he wasn't such a flirt with everyone, he could easily be with her. i'm not sure why he won't stop.
"am i that hot for you to keep staring?" he knock me out of my trance.
i frown and turn my head back to the field. "you should try harder." he raise his eyebrow at me.
"you should ask her out," i proclaim, with a soft tone.
his tan face grows darker and redder every second. he somehow is merely flustered over that than the constant flirting he does to others.
other friends i don't talk much to starts crowding around us, mostly talking to princeton. there was an occasional wink thrown at me from a guy, or a small question that i answered simply. but i was content. i wasn't close to anyone of them enough to feel ignored. i only had friends to have friends. it was the norm, and being deadpanned made me only out of the norm.
these people were uncaring, almost delinquents, but not bad enough to get arrested or accused of murder. but they were just boring people, boring everything.
when cindy came and finished her practice, we met up to hang out.
"hiya, charlotte!" she bounces and gives me a loose hug.
she went over and gave a tight hug to princeton, and starts to talk to him instead.
i was content. good for him, anyway.
we and two other boys left to go to 7/11, so they could steal and bargain for juuls and snacks.
i sit on a bumper curb, waiting for them to leave the store. it was at this time i started to think to myself.
we as human beings live boring lives. all we do is for the future generation. our purpose to live is for the future generation, and their purpose is the next. and the next, and the next. i hate it.
selfish. we only choose what's necessary and throw away the dark parts. what a waste of our lives.
so what's the point in living. to die, and then rot. your name will be forgotten in a couple of years and if you're lucky, decades.
life isn't quick and painless.
