Everyone was wearing robes, and most had their hoods up against the falling snow. L scoured the area, but she couldn't find the figure she'd been chasing. They were lost to her. All they had to do was stop running and act casually to blend in.
L kicked herself for not confronting them when she had the chance, but she had no idea what they had been doing or who they were. She decided to keep it to herself for now. She couldn't be sure who it was and she didn't recognise the voice. Though that didn't mean a lot when she barely knew anyone. Add magic to the mix, and she couldn't be sure of anything anymore.
She pulled up the hood of her cloak since passersby were starting to stare. They must have known who she was, and L took off to the house before any of them decided to speak to her. She didn't feel like talking to any strangers. What she really needed was to talk to Robbie about what happened. There was no risk of anyone else finding out.
She was back at the house in seconds, but when she walked in, she could tell something was wrong. Her senses scanned the house and found voices upstairs. She called up, and Mrs Worcester shouted back that she'd be down in a minute. Her voice wavered, and L stayed in the hallway until Mrs Worcester came downstairs. She was wringing her hands on an apron. Her expression was unreadable, and that was strange in itself. She'd always been an open book.
There was worry in her eyes when she came closer to L.
"L, dear, we didn't think you would be back until this evening. Would you like some lunch?"
L raised a brow at her, "Yeah, they gave me the day off. What's going on?"
Mrs Worcester looked flustered as she walked off to the kitchen, "Oh, that was nice of them... and nothing is going on. It's lunchtime, and you must be hungry."
L followed after her and shook her head slowly, looking over the countertop.
"No, something's wrong. I can sense it. You're worried about something. Where's Robbie? I can't hear any sounds from him?"
Mrs Worcester jumped at L's question about Robbie, and L knew for certain that something was wrong. She moved around the counter and stood in front of Mrs Worcester.
"What's going on? Why are you so worried, and where is Robbie?"
Mrs Worcester was shaking, "I don't know... he received a message to meet Archie for his cast removing. He was so excited and said we didn't need to go with him. Oh, I wish we had now because he never came back. We went to see Archie, but he said Robbie was there ten minutes and left quite happily. We don't know where he went or why he wouldn't come back here first. I'm sure we're worrying over nothing but with everything that's happened..."
L understood the worry immediately, "I'll go find him. He might have got sidetracked by sightseeing. I'll bring him back as soon as I find him, and then you can lecture him for being an idiot."
Mrs Worcester looked grateful, but her worry was deeply etched into her face. She thanked L and walked out of the kitchen.
L scowled when memories of the strange figure by the wall rushed back to her, Mrs Worcester may have good reason to be concerned. L ran back outside and used her senses to retrace Robbie's steps. She followed them to the hospital, where Archie would have treated him. Then she could sense that he'd come out and he'd turned in the opposite direction to the house. She followed his steps using sight and scent, which was steadily getting stronger.
Soon enough, L came to the reason, and she looked up to the top of the watchtower to see a familiar silhouette looking out. L swore under her breath, but she couldn't help smiling as she dug a hand into one of the holes in the side of the tower. They were discreet, but they led all the way up the side, and she began to climb. The height didn't scare her in the slightest, and she was soon at the top. She had moved so quietly that Robbie hadn't noticed.
