10 Hours Before the Outbreak

"Kim Chun-Hwa!"

Soo-min's voice carried across the school courtyard as I stepped through the gates. I winced, glancing at the nearby students who had turned to look. She was waving at me like she hadn't seen me in years, even though we'd spoken just last night. Her hair was tied up in a practical bun, and her glasses rested neatly on the bridge of her nose, giving her a no-nonsense look that belied her loud personality.

I walked up to her, lowering my voice. "Do you have to yell like that? Everyone's staring."

Unbothered, she grinned and grabbed my arm. "Good morning to you too," she said, leaning in closer. "Admit it, you missed me."

"You called me for four hours last night," I shot back. "How can I miss you when you never leave me alone?"

Soo-min just laughed, ignoring my complaints as we walked toward our lockers. Her grip on my arm was firm, her usual way of forcing her presence into my personal space.

By the time we reached our lockers, the first bell rang. "Did you hear about the virus that's spreading?" Soo-min asked, her tone dropping into something closer to concern as she grabbed her books.

I paused for a moment, glancing at her. "No. What about it?"

"They're saying it's really dangerous. Some people are even leaving the city," she said, her voice lower now, almost hesitant.

I shrugged. "It's probably just a scare. These things blow over in a few months—if that."

Her expression eased, but only a little. We headed to class, finding our seats as our homeroom teacher arrived. However, I noticed there were fewer students than usual.

6 Hours, 30 Minutes Before the Outbreak

Halfway through the lesson, a crumpled piece of paper landed on my desk. I glanced at the teacher, who was busy writing something on the board, before quietly unfolding it.

Did you hear about the virus? It turns people into zombies.

I frowned, my initial reaction dismissive. Zombies? Seriously? I scribbled a quick reply—something sarcastic—and tossed the note to the next person. The lesson dragged on, my focus fading as my mind wandered.
