Chapter 28

Noah Hatfield, a thirty two years old African American, two years older than Lena, works with an organization that changes ownership rights and things like that, had a very strong steady income, had a perfect record, grew up in the projects but made it to Harvard, he was the definition of perfect and I couldn't help but wonder why that seemed to be the trend in this case.

Lena was supposedly the perfect wife, perfect colleague, perfect neighbor who made the perfect casserole but Mrs perfect somehow wound up dead with more than fifteen stab wounds spanning across her chest and with a very possible chance of comiting adultery, the same sin she publicly murdered her husband for.

Now another Mr perfect with a high chance of having been in an affair with a married woman.

I had nothing against their decision cause that seemed like a normal trend in our today's society but I couldn't understand, why slander her husband?

My only answer was to hope this was some kind of misunderstanding but still that would mean another back to level 0.0.

Noah had decided to meet harry and I in his home, it wasn't exactly a good look for officers to appear at your work place to question you on a murder, not that he knew that was what our visit was all about.

As I settled into the couch, his house was beautiful with a brown themed interior decoration, harry settled in next to me.

He looked different from the CCTV camera recording, bigger, he had a beard covering his lower jaw and he seemed a bit taller, he's cut his hair.

"So what is this about?" He asked politely
"We would just ask you a few questions and would be on our way" I explained with a smile
He was very charismatic, the type you couldn't help but like, shame he is a possible murderer
"I still don't know what this is about" he said with a laugh
"Does the name Lena Browns ring any bells? " harry asked hitting the nail on the head
"Lena Browns, oh Lena, is she okay? " he asked in both concern and sadness
Was he really clueless about her demise?
"We were hoping you could tell us about her" harry said sternly
What was wrong with him
"She was um, she was a good friend, is she okay? "
"What was your relationship exactly? " harry pressed
"We um had a thing for a while, is she okay" he asked, the concern in his voice rising at each word
"When last did you see her? "
"Last year, before her divorce"
"Where were you on the 13th April from 9:00 - 9:30 pm? " I asked slowly and calmly
"No no no " he said shaking his head
"This can't be happening right now" he added, running a hand through his hair, he paced the length of the wide expanse of his living room, I sat still giving him time to take this in
"Is she? " he croaked, his voice a mere whisper, he cleared his throat
"Is she dead? "

Harry produced pictures of the crime scene and laid them out on the center table, he rushed over nearly knocking down a vase in the process and not giving a damn

"Oh My God"he whispered, clutching the pictures so tightly like his life depended on it, I could see the trembling in his hands as they covered his mouth, his eyes went watery all at once as he sank into the brown rug that covered the middle of the room.

"When did this happen? " he asked with a shaky voice
"On the 13th of April "
"That's.... that's three weeks ago" he whispered
"She's been dead for three weeks? " he asked like that was the most unbelievable thing he's ever heard
"We were hoping you could tell us more than that you were good friends and....... to explain this" he said producing the button
"We found this on the crime scene " he explained
"Oh um" he rubbed his palm across face
"Yes I used to, um we used to be an item"
"But she broke it off months ago, for reasons I still don't know, but something about her still loving her husband.... I can't believe she's dead"
"The button? " I asked
"I frequent her place back then and she did mine but always behind her husband and her son, she was so afraid" he said with a sad lost look
"When did this affair start? "
"Sometime last year, February I think it ended six months later but I couldn't get over her" his voice broke

"Am really sorry, I know this is hard for you"I said reaching for his  shoulders, I could hear my heart breaking for him
"You know the worst part was I knew she was the one" he sniffed
"But she belonged to another, someone that didn't value her, but I didn't mind, I didn't care until she started feeling guilty, she knew her husband was cheating and I think she started our relationship to spite him, but I didn't care cause I loved her" he exhaled as he continued
"July that same year, she ended things, three months later her divorce followed"
"You kept contact? " I asked
"No, saw the news, she made sure to cut all ties"
"How did you guys meet? " harry asked as he scribbled something on his notepad, brows drawn together in seriousness.
"She came to the office for transfer of ownership of their house and a few cars, I guess she saw the divorce coming and prepared for it"
"With the consent of her husband? "
Harry asked
"I don't really know but she came with the necessary documents and her husband's  signature on them, but honestly I don't think he knew what he signed"

Harry nodded in understanding

"Did she contact you after the divorce? "
"No, but I um I tried to contact her but that didn't bear any fruits, I guess a part of me was hoping I participated in the reason for the divorce"
"Do you know anybody who could have done this" I asked calmly
He laughed like that was the funniest thing he's ever heard
"Of course her asshole husband who else"
"Do you think he knew about the affair? "
"I don't care, but I don't think so, Lena made sure to be discreet. I just can't believe she went back to that motherfucker, sometimes I think they deserve each other, she had it coming anyway"

Okay.. He needed to stop talking

"Hey Noah, mind what you say" I whispered calmly.

I liked Noah maybe it was our racial similarities but whatever it was I just didn't want him to say what he would regret

"No, seriously, am so pathetic, whining for someone that doesn't even deserve me, she deserves whatever she got after everything she did to me" he said temper rising

He was moving to the stage two of grief. Anger. Been there, done that

"Okay we would be on our way now" I said signalling harry as I made my way towards the door.

"We would be in contact" I said over my shoulder

"Wow, typical case of jealous ex" harry muttered behind me after Noah banged his door loudly behind us

I turned abruptly

"You think he did it? " I asked

"You heard him, and he avoided telling us were he was at the time of the murder"

"Wow, I really over estimated your sense of judgement, so in your right mind, you. Think. Noah killed Lena"

He groaned

"Can we not do this right now? "

What the fuck was wrong with him, I opened my mouth to tell him what I thought

"Ash? " I heard behind me,
I turned to meet those ever familiar blue eyes that always seemed to kick my heart into overdrive, he looked the same, a bit bulkier but still as handsome as ever as a boyish grin broke out across his face in recognition.

Its been months since I last saw this face, Charlotte's funeral.

"Jay? " I whispered
