Here is a normal minor key:

A B C D E F G A.

You'll notice in every major key, the leading tone was a semitone off the tonic, which gave it its melodic power to resolve into the tonic. However, in a minor, the leading tone is not a semitone away, so minors don't really have a working leading tone. This is when harmonic minors come into play. A harmonic minor is a normal minor with the leading tone raised by a semitone. For example:

A minor:

A B C D E F G A.

A harmonic minor:

A B C D E F G# A.

Not only that, there's also something called a melodic minor. A melodic minor is a normal minor with the leading tone and submedient raised by a semitone. For example:

A minor:

A B C D E F G A

A melodic minor:

A B C D E F# G# A.

Activity: Identify the type of minor. (To do this, find the normal minor and compare it). Do this in your head or copy it out.

1) C ________ Minor: C D Eb F G Ab B C

2) D ________ Minor: D E F G A B C# D

3) G# _______ Minor: G# A# B C# D# F G G#

4) F ________ Minor: F G G# A# C C# E F
